A Young Alex Lifeson and His Parents Clash Over His Future

I just wonder why it was recorded in the first place? Was it so in the future they could show him the footage back and say HA! We told you so... Well in this case the young angry teenager was right :) I certainly remember having that same look on my face a fair few times when discussing my future with my parents (probably some time last year LOL :P :))

Yep, but how many times does it turn out in the kids favor? 1 out of every 100,000? or 1,000,000? or more?

True... but that's the conundrum isn't it... Give it your all and live the starving artist lifestyle to maybe make it big or just even make a living at it if your lucky.... or give up on that, go to college and get a normal job. And if you give up, you will just never know.

 

How many of us went through that type of decision ?

I saw some of this footage in that RUSH documentary last year. I wondered the same thing, then.

 

And what is up with his (and I assume that's his sister) rocking back and forth the whole time?

I have the DVD and watched it many times. This scene is by far the best in the movie. My parents, especially my father, made me practice my piano a lot. At first I didn't like it but then I did. In the teens, I had many offers to do various gigs (studio work, touring bands, cruise ships, Vegas, etc.) but when I told my father my said "absolutely not." Then I said I was thinking about going to music school and he said that same thing. Both my parents came from the "old country" and didn't even have a high school degree. So they pushed me into anything else but music when it came time for college. They did the same thing to my twin. When he decided to get an engineering degree I said to myself "what the heck, I'll try that." Turns out I loved it, got my Ph.D., worked at NASA and the rest is history. My brother got a Ph.D. too (yeah I know that's weird). But, I still think it would have been fun to try the music scene for a year just to see what would happened.

I always wondered why that discussion was recorded also. Probably was some kind of celebration being filmed, like a Birthday or something, and they started discussing Alex's future. JMHO.
