What is the best nut for sg with lyre.

I have played guitar for over 30 years. My main guitars have always been Les Pauls until I picked up a 61 reissue a few months ago. I love it so much I had to have the SG original with the Lyre vibrola. What is the best nut to use with the Lyre? I am concerned that the guitar will not hold a tune when using the vibrola the way a locking nut holds it's tune. Any advice is appreciated

Can't speak for other's, but I've always changed the stock "Corian" nut, for a bone nut!

Never had any tuning issues, with the bone nuts. Your own experience may vary.

I got a similar issue with my roxy SG, the nut keeps loosening up when I use the whammy bar, even though I regularly screw it really tight it again.

I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself very well :) but would you think using a different nut could solve this issue?

i have been happy with Graphtec nuts that are all ready filed, just a little filing and its done. I use them on everything now. but that is my preference.

The nut in this case is the bar glued to the upper end of the fretboard, grooved for guiding the string runs from the peghead across the fretboard to the bridge. It defines scale length and affects the action of open strings. By the way, string action means the space between the strings and the crowns of the fret wires.

Nice laymen terms capmaster , you should have heard me stumbling trying to explain that to my girlfriend last week.

Thanks for the compliment. Since I always have an online dictionary opened when active here, I know well how hard it is to find guitar technology terms there.

While in school, our English teachers never told us pupils the meaning of an English word in German, and we weren't allowed to translate them in most cases, too. They explained English words in English, and we also had to do so. I thankfully remember these days now. Never would want to miss them. [thumbup]

I have tried just about every material from synthetic ivory to graphite to corian and I always come back to bone. Even with this said, the material does not matter as much as that the nut is cut to the correct angle.

I am a major Bigsby abuser so I like to use Big Bends Nut Sauce in the nut slots for some extra slickness and I have a Schaller roller bridge installed.

post-65240-035119400 1399606422_thumb.jpgDo you know how hard it was to find an SG original with the Lyre Vibrola? Especially in Iowa! I was looking for another new 61 reissue and that guitar was a 2013 model. I found a VOS and I am sure it was worth the money but I guess I want to be the one aging a guitar. The 61 was out so I went in search of the "original" and no one had anything but the aged Cherry and it was more brown than red so that one was out. I called Gibson directly... Nothing... I felt like I was looking for a 4 leaf clover. Then there she was, EBay new, never been played or so they say. I need to post some pictures of all the weapons as soon as I can but I cannot wait for tomorrow when the newest member of the family arrives. Crossing my fingers that it will be everything I hope and expect it to be. I am so leery of EBay but disparate times call for desperate measures. Here is one of the pics...

Cross my fingers for you, too, and am curious to seeing more pics... [love]

Thanks for the great tip EVOL. I bought a small syringe of nut sauce and I am a believer, all of my guitars tune smoother and stay in tune. I am using it on Graphtec nuts and saddles and I am impressed for the price.
