I bought a V2. I never liked the look before but something about them has now put a twinkle in my eye. I'm looking for a matching maple E2. Can anyone tell me what to look for?

I remember when these guitars first hit the stores. But, I can't remember if they made an Explorer that looks like this one. I did a search on the Internet and didn't see one either. Are you looking for an Explorer that is made the same way that this Flying V is?

Yes, Gibson made a matching "E2" but I've mostly seen the walnut versions.

The E2 was made from 79-83. The body was five piece maple and walnut laminate with sculpted edges as you see above. The top options were Figured Maple and Natural. The figured maple tops seem to go for a couple hundred less than natural. Fret board is ebony w/dot. Gold plated hardware. I believe the Kahler trem you see above was a factory option. Hope that helps.

Thanks JDub, I see a few of the E2's in a walnut finish. Are these just stained maple then?

I don't know Jimm; That's a really good question. It sure looks like walnut in the pic but I don't see a walnut top option listed anywhere. Weird.

I believe all those guitars were made the same way, alternating layers of maple and walnut. I think they just reversed the order on some of them and maple was on the outside on some and the walnut was on the outside on others.

Yes, you are absolutely correct, cjsinsla. I happened upon the answer in Tony Bacon's book, "Flying V, Explorer and Firebird: An Odd-Shaped History of Gibson's Weird Electric Guitars." In one of the chapters they discuss the V2 and E2. I was reading the book on a flight this week and remembered this discussion.

BTW, that book is a wealth of detail on V's and Explorers.
