If you are specifically referring to electric guits...

I love my Epiphones, period. They can be upgraded to the teeth with Gibson or a plethora of incredible boutique hardware and pickups. They are built like tanks. Can be had for a bargain any day any time. I have started a DIY thread in the Epiphone Lounge called Buffalo Bob's Casino overhaul to exemplify this point. No the new Chinese versions are not (in my opinion, and it is simply an opinion) as good as the older Korean ones. The Earlier Japanese versions are tops but pricey in their own right.

Once you get the thermonuclear plastic glop (polyurethane) of em, you have a great starting point for a good if not great guitar.

This is also a great way to go if you play out...leave the $ 5000.00 vintage les paul at home. I have overhauled several early Korean Les Pauls, (and will again). as far as a players guitar They act like, feel like and can with the right work and parts sound like your baby tucked in her case at home...

My two cents worth...

Buffalo B

I'll 2nd this! I've had a few Epis in my time and while the Norlin Japan Texan's didn't completely do it for me the Chinese Texan's and my new Les Paul Custom Pro have proven themselves to me thus far. I'd like to own a Gibson but I'm poor so I go for the next best thing.

I really rate my Yamahas. To be honest I think Yamaha makes as good a guitar as Gibson.

I have a sunburst 1992 Yamaha SG2000 (I changed the pickups to Bare Knuckle Mules)with ebony fingerboard and a good action. It plays as well as a Les Paul and has better higher fret access.

My other Yamaha is an AE12 jazz box (approx 1974) which has been refretted (good job), spruce top and an excellent tone.

Yamaha makes good guitars. Overall, where new guitars are concerned, you can't really buy a bad guitar these days. I even have a $20 First Act that plays killer and sounds great.

Above all, get whatever feels best in your hands and sounds best to your ears.

I love my Warmoth. They make them (in Puyallop Washington) according to your special order. Super high quality.

Here's mine. I just traveled with it and played at a small venue:

What's the spec on that guitar Tman?

The top looks particularly splendid and that fingerboard doesn't look like standard rosewood.

My Parkers are the best guitars I've ever played - by far.

Notes

You are not the first I've heard say that. I haven't seen a Parker in a store in forever. I will look harder.

Love to brag about it Pin, thanks for asking. [biggrin]

Quartersawn Zebrawood book matched laminate and zebrawood fret board.

3/8th size chambered mahogany strat body with a 24.75 scale 3A bird's-eye bound maple neck. I actually scored the body laminate off of ebay and Ken Warmoth said he could use it as long as it was appropriate size and kiln dried. Clear gloss finish. Sperzel locking tuners. Seymour Duncan pearly gates humbuckers in bridge, TV Jones neck. Pull knob for split coils.

It's really amazing. Tied for Warmoth's guitar of the month, in August 2011. http://unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=17308.0

Can you tell I'm proud of it?

I think lately we have a larger and better selection of not well know, other makes of guitar brands or well known brands than ever before.I remember back in the early 70's when I was looking to buy a guitar to practice on if you couldnt afford the usual Gibson or Fender your choices got small.I ended up with a KAY it was a copy of an SG and the pickups were no name filtertron looking things but hell I didnt know what I was doing, not much cash and even wanting,Wow some of those tedisco looking things were scary looking. The choices now seem endless and I guess it's better for the beginner especially with the internet for help with sound demos and forums like this one.I have bought some off brand things and have been pleasntly suprised or felt totally ripped off,but I now have many many choices.I had bought a Dillion that looked like a PRS soapbar couldnt afford a real PRS some years ago way before the SE's came out and it was one of the best made\sounding guitars I have bought and at only $499.99.

BTW if anyone knows who owns it now i'd like to buy it back,I really miss it.

This Jay Turser was a brand I had never heard of but I was looking for an inexpensive Strat style guitar.I would have bought a squire but I really liked the vine fretboard inlay on this one and it sounded pretty good then fantastic after I put Duncan single coil looking humbuckers in it.

MVC-024S.jpg

Even the availability of pickups to choose from and other parts is almost overwelming now,so not just other makes but other makes of parts.

I even had one of the first Inexpensive Parkers to come out, remember how hot they were at first and how expensive. Then out came the P38 a good guitar for a good price it's now discontinued?

I have few Musicman guitars, super high quality, awesome guitars. If you're a Les Paul guy, the Armada is a great guitar.

I've looked at those Music Man Armada's in the catalogs and online and they do look awesome...

They spoil you:

  • Light weight (mine weigh about 5 lbs each)
  • Sustains as long as my 8 lb LTD-LP
  • Hardened stainless steel frets and ebony fingerboard makes bending a breeze
  • Great workmanship and beautifully dressed fret ends
  • 14" radius, 25.5" scale - perfect for my hands
  • Single master volume near my hand makes for easy on-the-fly balance with the band adjustments
  • Single master tone makes it easy to change no matter what your pickup combination is
  • Well balanced, take your hands off and the guitar stays put - no neck dive or rise
  • Contoured - it's so comfortable it's like wearing the guitar instead of holding it
  • Locking tuners, Graph Tech nut and bridge, plus a straight string path from ball end to tuner makes for incredible tuning stability - I might do a gig, put it in the case, drive it home and to the next gig and it's still in tune. It stays in tune better than my guitars that don't have a whammy
  • Great sound - Duncan pickups plus a piezo under the bridge that you can play alone or blend with the mags makes for some very interesting tones
  • Great customer service, the wood on my guitar cracked over a year past the warranty expiration date, and they replaced the guitar with a new one, and paid shipping both ways

Sorry to say this on a Gibson forum, but since I got my first Parker about 3 years ago, I haven't put more than 10 minutes on my Gibson. It spoils you.

I liked the first one so much, I got a second one made with custom pickups, so it feels like the first Parker, but gives me different sounds.

Here they are - the picture was taken with my cell phone on a cloudy day - the wood is much more honey colored than the pic makes them look. The one on the right is the DF522NN (NN for Notes Norton) and it has Duncan P-Rails with triple shot rings giving me the choice of (1) P-90 (2) Rail (3) Series Humbucker and (4) Parallel Humbucker sounds plus the piezo with the blend knob. It's now my only gigging guitar.

Since I got my Parkers, I no longer have GAS. I can look at other guitars and appreciate their beauty, but I'm so satisfied with the Parkers that I have no desire to own another.

Notes, the other day I saw a used Maxxfly DF824 (I believe) in a guitar shop store front window for $1450. Seemed like a great deal on a great guitar, but I have all the guitars I need now and don't have $1450 laying around. Might end up being the guitar that got away.

...a lot of great stuff...

Thanks for all of that! I am nearly done buying guitars and Parker has been on the list since they came out. I tried a couple of the less 'spensive when they introduce P38 and stuff, I should have bought a couple back then I guess.
