saturn Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I just watched the end of a big soccer game on TV. It seems that Manchester City has won the Premier League title. Looks like a big deal but I know nothing about soccer. Would that be comparable to our NFL Super Bowl? Is it only between UK teams or do other European teams play in the Premier League? Just curious. Edit: OK I just found the Wiki page..
IanHenry Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Hi Saturn, Yes, I suppose the Premier League is the equivalent of the U.S's NFL, it's the top layer of the domestic sport. It includes teams from England & Wales but not Scotland, which has it own league's. Soccer is actually called Football in the U.K, it always has been, I think most fan's would consider the term Soccer a little, shall we say Girly (that's no insult to the Girls on my part at all). Ian
IanHenry Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Wow we over in the US are getting called girly for calling Football - Soccer when you guys in the UK call cigarettes F@gs. Well, I guess you have your own football in the U.S, though for the most part I seems to me that you play it with your hands. That looks more like our rugby. Ian
AndyK Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 To clarify, today was the last day of the Premier League - 20 teams play each other home and away. Whichever team gets the most points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw), wins the title. This year saw at least 4 teams with a realistic chance of winning it, and it went to the last day. Personally, my team plays in the division lower, so I'm not completely into the PL, but at least Man United came 7th!!!
LarryUK Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I hate Football/Soccer. I used to like it. But since we have had the influx of foreign players it's become a dirty game. Diving and cheating. You can see on TV that someone has clearly dived for a penalty. Yet nothing's done about it. The Football Association should clamp down on it. I've said for a long time. A proven dive should warrant a £1m fine for the player and club. The wages are ridiculous. £300k a week!! Just like in the US the wages are stupid. The working man can't afford to go and see it now because of the cost. Just like some concerts really. Rip off. The greed mentality of the World will be the end of mankind.

I used to play football (I refuse to use the girly S word) a lot when younger but I hate the professional game and never watch it and don't follow it at all. Just give me a pint and a f@g (strange how I can't use the proper word spelling here as the word is almost exclusively used for cigarettes in the UK) any day of the week.

On BBC Breakfast this morning, Tori Amos used the word 'Spunky' there was a sharp intake of breath. Different meaning here.

Is "diving" what we call "flopping"?
