Scott Marlowe Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Kg0v0Er8Ak Not sure, but that is one trippy video. The whole time I was watching it I kept waiting for Young to start saying "My precious!"
tweed2 Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Here's another (and in my opinion, better musically) video with Crosby playing the same semi-hollow 12 string. Gibson with the head stock painted over?
Thomse Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Looks like a 12 string Gibson Byrdland .There were not many made i may be wrong. But there were like 50 made .
flyingarmadillo Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Looks like a 12 string Gibson Byrdland .There were not many made i may be wrong. But there were like 50 made . Can't be a Byrdland, the 12 strings were only done in 1976 and the second video is from 1970. I'm leaning towards a Guild Starfire.
charlie brown Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 I had a thread on this, months ago. http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/102824-david-crosbys-electric-12-sting-bass/ There was a "spoof site" claiming it was a 12-string bass! LOL!!! I posted that, as well! I don't think we every came up with any definitive answer? I'm pretty sure it was just a Custom made guitar, for the man himself. CB
tweed2 Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Man, this one has been bothering me. I've spent some time trying to figure out the three guitars in the second video. First two, easy. Stephen Still, Gretsch White Falcon. Neil Young, Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120. And from what I've been able to find, so far, a custom (1969?) Gibson Byrdland 12, that has been massaged by Alembic (the first of several Alembics for David). Funny how the front and the back of the headstock are painted black. Rumor has it that Alembic did that when they got it. Alembic was just getting going and David saw what they had done for Jerry Garcia and wanted some of that.
charlie brown Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Found This: http://www.rickresource.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=971&start=15 CB
tweed2 Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Excellent job. The info I found was on a European CSN fan site, but looks like they missed the mark. The Alembic thing caught my eye, and gave it some credence as several of his subsequent guitars were A-mods. I bow to your superior sleuthing.
vomer Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Good one CB. Here's the relevant section: Crosby[this pic is ca. '69-'70] is holding a custom modified guitar owned by Stills, which began it's life as a Guild Duane Eddy 6 string, but for whatever reason, Stills had it "modified" removing the stock neck and putting a custom made 12 string neck on it.I think he also stuck a Gibson Varitone in it.
crust Posted May 16, 2014 Author Posted May 16, 2014 What's the Epiphone ? That 12 string looks pretty cool, different to have just one cut.
