Ryan H Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 I've had a dilemma ever since I bought my JCM800... The gain is some of the best I've heard; it's a Marshall, you expect that. What I didn't expect was the stellar clean tone when plugged into the Low sensitivity input. Unfortunately, being a single channel amp, the low and high sensitivity inputs aren't switchable via an A/B box. The high input cleans up to a nice "bluesy clean", just a little hair around the notes, but for the times I really need to go from pristine clean to Marshall crunch and beyond, I bought this pedal. The JHS Angry Charlie: Went down to my local guitar shop (The Guitar Shop, or TGS, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) and plugged into a JCM800 they had ('85, only one year difference to mine) with a plethora of "Marshall-in-a-Box" pedals, and a few regular overdrives and distortions. I narrowed it down to 3 pedals; the Xotic SL Drive, the Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe, and the JHS Angry Charlie. Eliminated the Xotic pretty quickly; it's bass response didn't hold up against the others, it sounded a little boxy. I probably spent 30-45 minutes going back and forth between the Angry Charlie and the Pinnacle. Both are INCREDIBLE pedals. But after tweaking and playing for all that time, I noticed the Angry Charlie had more gain (and more Useable gain) and the Pinnacle was just a little too thumpy in the bass (I run the bass on my JCM around 6-7) for what I wanted it for. The Angry Charlie won. It had all the Marshall grind I could want from Plexi territory in the first 1/4 of the Drive knob, JCM in the next quarter, and modded JCM into DSL territory in the last half. It's also lighter than my IPhone. Really can't say enough good things about this pedal. Was well worth the 2 bills I dropped on it. -Ryan
Ryan H Posted May 15, 2014 Author Posted May 15, 2014 Right on I know finding the sweet spot in this situation is a chore. I just got my JCM 2000 and I have got till June 7th to be happy with it. How are you liking it? Heard good things about those amps... -Ryan
