quapman Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 To be honest, through my crappy laptop speaker(which of course means nothing) I actually liked the sound of the JHS better(before you revealed them). And dude,,, I don't want to alarm you but the entire top of your head is missing.

krock Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Great demo, I found it very informative. Both sounded great, unfortunately none of the music stores near me stock JHS pedals so I cant try one out

rocketman Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 I guessed correctly but I'll admit it was close. That's a very neat pedal. Seems well worth the $200.

Yeah, honestly I would have no problems gigging with just that pedal and a clean amp...the audience would never be able to tell, and honestly, it doesn't Feel like a pedal. It feels like my Marshall, but tighter, fatter and gainier. -Ryan
'Scales Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Nice work! So if you use this with a non-Marshall amp, say Fender or Peavey, does it then sound more like a Marshall? If I heard right you ran it through the same Marshall in the test - if you have the chance to do a comparison with a different amp sometime that would also be very interesting. Thanks for the video

bonzoboy Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I thought that I would have a hard time differentiating between the two even though my earbuds are pretty decent quality.I got it right, but I had an adantage, like you Ryan I have a JCM 800,2204 model but mine is an '83 with a 1960 B cab. loaded with G-12-L-25 Celestions, what type of cab and speaker combo were you using in the comparison? For $200 the pedal would be a pretty decent substitute for the 2204 though. If anyone would like to get the authentic Marshall amp vibe for even less money, look through ebay etc. for a used first edition Marshall Guv'nor in the metal casing, which was the British made one-the rest were MIC or MIV and had plastic housing. The original Guv'nor was like a stack-in-a-box.
Ryan H Posted May 18, 2014 Author Posted May 18, 2014 What type of cab and speaker combo were you using in the comparison? Details of the setup were under the video during the sound clips. PRS SE 2x12 cab with their proprietary Vintage 30 clones. -Ryan

I considered looking for an old Guv'nor, but this thing has a few advantages; it's the same size as a standard MXR pedal, maybe a tad bigger, so it works better on a pedalboard. It weighs less than my IPhone, which is also a benefit for pedalboard users. It's Made in America and the customer service at JHS is second-to-none. And it's more available than an old metal-cased Guv'nor; the people who Have them Know they're great and hold onto them. -Ryan
surfpup Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Certainly a nice sounding gain box. As someone else mentioned you were using the Marshall for both (though admittedly less of the preamp section once you used the low gain input). Definitely would be interesting to see how well their "Marshall" sound works with a Fender or a super clean solid state amp even. Would seem to be a great box for someone with an old one channel amp (Marshall JTM or Fender Bassman for example) who wanted to keep a clean sound but have a killer dirty sound too. Nice demo. For the record I guessed correctly.

bonzoboy Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 Thanks for the info,I missed your specs on the speaker/cab configuration-sounded good though.
krock Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 May I ask if you were able to guess correctly? ;) -Ryan I was, but only because I'm used to hearing JCM 800's (ex band member had one). It was very close and I don't think anyone other than a guitar player would actually find any difference
Ryan H Posted May 18, 2014 Author Posted May 18, 2014 Here's that video I said I would record... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMfjmBshMIE -Ryan
Jimi Mac Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 I guessed correctly but not because I have any experience or knowledge of either... I simply deduced my guess because the name of the JHS is "Angry" Charlie and the tone of the 2nd one had more bite, and a little more attitude... Not sure my logic was sound at all... May I ask how fresh the tubes are in the JCM? Could a fresh set of tubes make any difference in the edge or bite that I noticed seemed a little dull in comparison? Just curious...
'Scales Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Thanks for putting that up Ryan. Unfortunately the sound didn't work well on my computer - kind of compressed or something. But I'll take your word for it that its worth trying and if I come across one will give it a go as could be very useful. I realise this'll sound lame, but I've found that if I set my cheap old DS1 to 10 o'clock on both tone and distortion and crank the level up a decent amount I get a Marshall-ish enough 'crash' out of my Fender amp on clean to have a bit of fun - cheap thrills I guess
krock Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Im that second vid of yours I actually preferred the angry charlie into your roland, then the marshall, then amplitube and finally the scarlett

Could a fresh set of tubes make any difference in the edge or bite that I noticed seemed a little dull in comparison? Just curious... The tubes are probably about a year old. I might have been running the master volume on the Marshall a little low when I recorded that (as unfortunately I don't have the luxury of cranking a 50-watt head in this small house), so that could have contributed to some of the dullness you heard. -Ryan
Ryan H Posted May 19, 2014 Author Posted May 19, 2014 Im that second vid of yours I actually preferred the angry charlie into your roland, then the marshall, then amplitube and finally the scarlett Because I forgot to mention it, for the Roland demo it was running into the "JC Clean" setting. I was pretty surprised by how the Micro Cube performed myself. Doesn't have the low end of the Marshall for single notes on the low strings, but that's what you get from a 6" speaker :P -Ryan
surfpup Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Clips one and 3 both sounded great. The Cube rocked!. I thought it was the Marshall at first - until the third clip came up, then I could tell the difference (mostly in the bottom end). Clips 2 and 4 sounded fake and buzzy to me.
Ryan H Posted May 19, 2014 Author Posted May 19, 2014 Clips 2 and 4 sounded fake and buzzy to me. Didn't expect those to sound particularly good, it's a dry guitar signal and a software amp after all! You have no idea how hard it is to make a dry guitar with a dirt pedal on top sound Decent with just a Tone and a Presence knob to work with...it's torture I tell you! Glad to see people are liking the Cube. That little 6" speaker really pumps it out! -Ryan
