Owning a Gibson for the first time...

...I immediately decided to join this forum. So far, even though I came from an high end Martin (OM28V), I am extremely pleased with my newly acquired 2006 Blues King!!! It is very playable, sounds big, very good handling of various dynamics, it is very good once strummed, even though fingerstyle is her nature. Very good intonation, volume and projection! The Martin is back in her case and the little Gibson won the hanger! :-)

Simply love it!

Lovely! [thumbup]

And a lefty to boot!

I have to admit that it is always a pain in the neck to be a lefty... I live in Italy. My first acoustic was bought in Florida, the second in France and this Gibson in Tokyo during a business trip last week... You can't just walk in a shop, play 10-20 guitars and choose... you gotta travel!

I didn't think that was a Gibson at first, had to do a double take and look at the headstock.

So is that all koa?

Lordy . . . that's got the market cornered on beautiful wood.

That's a gorgeous Custom Blues King. You seem very pleased with her.

Congrats on your first Gibson. . B)

Yes, it is a custom all koa with mahogany neck made in Bozeman in 2006. It doesn't look immediately as a pure Gibson, true, but I loved it at first sight. :-)

When anyone finds a guitar that sings for him or her, it is a special thing.

Congratulations and may you enjoy many years of playing with your new partner.

However, watch out for this forum. It is a deep cave that can keep you lost forever among other guitar players!

Just for sharing. When I played the guitar in the shop, I liked the sound and the neck a lot (and the looks, of course) even if something was new to me.. Couldn't describe it.. Maybe similar to what a guitar with a thick top would feel in your hands.. Anyway, also at home I had the feeling something was not right. I guessed it was the koa, less resonating than spruce and rosewood.. Then, an idea came straight to me: I removed the Baggs element piezo (never had a guitar with ust) being almost shocked at how you can have a piece of metal and canvas between the bridge and the saddle!!! Well, afterwards, I can't say for sure I've heard an improvement in the sound but I felt for the first time the back vibrating against my stomach. It resonates really significantly more. More volume too. I plan now to install JJB and forget quickly my brief experience with piezos...

Each to his own on Piezos...

I got my first guitar so-equipped as soon as one of the originals, the AE Ovations, were available where I could try one. I still have my original steel string and nylon string versions from the early 1970s.

I think a lot has to do with how/where you play. All of my flattops but a cheapie 12-string are AE with a piezo. The exception 12-string has a mag soundhole pup.

But I almost always play either through an amp or through a board when I "play out."

I know a lot of folks do not like anything but a microphone for an acoustic guitar - but a piezo, or even a mag pup offers a lot more versatility if you play out.

be still my heart!!!

yes indeed that is NICE!

this is going to KILL bluesking! where is he anyway?

Me?

Here I am, and you're right - that is a killer Blues King! [omg]

Koa and no p/g make it look like something else....

Carl Franklin plays a nice Koa something in this video where he plays the theme song from Acoustic Addicts (I fear a bit for Carl with that new string about to pole him in the eye!:

Congrats.

Koa tops are definitely a love it or hate it thing.

I do have one friend who is a big fan of all-koa guitars and I recall him once saying that buying them always was a bit of a gamble ss they have a tendency to sound brittle and a bit overly bright at first but very quickly mellow out. So if he is right the change you heard has probably less to do with removing the pickup then the guitar just shaking the cobwebs off.

Nice looking blues box - thanks for the observation on the under-saddle pickup, I believe they can be a hinderance on some guitars - glad you got her sounding 100%. [thumbup]
