fretplay Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 I was very sorry to hear of the death of Phil Everly early this year. With him died a piece of my life too as I remember the Everly Brothers from my early teens. Over the years their 'light has dimmed' but they were never the less highly influential to many of our 'founding fathers' to mention only Lennon and McCartney. The harmonies were fantastic with a natural content only achieved by a lifetime singing together. AS you can guess I have spent a great deal of time this year singing and playing Everly Brothers songs, they are not difficult to play but to get the feeling is another matter. I have recorded two, 'Let it Be Me' and 'So Sad' Watch the brothers sing 'Let it be Me' at The Royal Albert and you will see what I mean about feeling. 'So Sad' was written by Don just after his breakup with his second wife and I'm sure all of us have been there at some time, I certainly have. I spent hours on this song to the extent of waking in the night and the tune singing in my head. I wanted to do my version of the song not just a cover. It lay unfinished for some time but one night I went up to my studio and a guitar outro came to me which I felt finished the song. So where is all this going you may ask? Over the past couple of weeks I have been playing Everlys with my long time friend and Musical partner. He is younger than me so somehow hears the music differently, I must say we 'struggle'with the songs so after a while I sent him my recording of 'So Sad' He mailed back saying he quiet liked it but when we got together last night he went back to the old version. So the question I want to ask of you my forum friends is, am I being just too sensitive over this or has my version just 'lost the plot' anyway? I don't usually post my recordings but here is my version of the song in question. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dgl75k0B_E
pippy Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I didn't know the song so I had to google it for the sake of comparison. FWIW on the whole I preferred your version - and I'm being perfectly serious. I prefer the harmonies of the Bro's, of course, but apart from that?... Yours sounds sad. Theirs sounds like they are on their merry little way to round-up a few thousand head of cattle. And I liked the 'outro', too. P.
fretplay Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 Thanks Pippy glad you liked it. The Everlys harmonies are fantastic and you can hear the influence in many Lennon and McCartney songs. I agree with the 'way out west' feeling but the live performance at Royal Albert Hall is full of feeling. I do like outros rather than guitar breaks in the middle of a song. Clapton's coda on Layla is beautiful, I still like it and I think it was the first I ever heard, very ground breaking for the time.
