NHTom Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Ok.......I had to......it just cried take me home........not the most elaborate of finds, but had to be done. Gibson Sonex 180 Deluxe fun guitar with a very "different" feel to it......not sure if it's the neck shape or what, but very different feeling than my lp's or explorer I think my "disease" is getting worse. NHTom
Izzy Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 She's a bit.....portly, isn't she? We all have it bad, dude. Just be sure you play!!!!!
NHTom Posted May 29, 2014 Author Posted May 29, 2014 lmao............"portly" you could say that........it weighs a ton. NHTom
rocketman Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Congrats! First electric I every had. I used that for all of my gigs in my early days, since I was about 14 years old. It is indeed built like a beast. I can't tell you how many times I dropped that guitar, but it never failed. I believe that yours has Velvet Brick pickups. My Custom has Dirty Fingers and they are loud. Here's mine after I restored it.

NHTom Posted June 1, 2014 Author Posted June 1, 2014 Ok, does anyone know what these tuners are called? Similar to the chrome Gibson ones on my explorer, but have the larger chrome (tulip style?) keys. I have to say, these are some of the most solid feeling tuners I've ever used. The body is similar to my 85 explorer, but they have the larger keys on them. NHTom
capmaster Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Nice catch, Tom, congrats on your rare item, HNGD! There have been only a few Gibsons with bolt-on neck and three pickup height adjustment screws. I think they should have introduced the latter on all humbucker guitars - OK, perhaps except the Historics. Three screws allow for much better and more stable pickup adjustment.
capmaster Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 ... I think my "disease" is getting worse. NHTom What "disease?"
NHTom Posted June 1, 2014 Author Posted June 1, 2014 What "disease?" well, maybe it has to do with the fact that when I picked up my mahogany special, I put this sonex on layaway, then, when I picked up the sonex, I put this on layaway....... "JUST ONE MORE" right? NHTom

"JUST ONE MORE" right? NHTom In my opinion, you may dig your chances as long as the diagnosis isn't both manifest and official. If there is nothing, it can't be out of control.
surfpup Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I think those are cool. Maybe because my first Gibson was a "The Paul" which is not too dissimilar.
Tman Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 First of all really cool guitar! Personal note of thanks Tom. I showed my wife the "how many do you need" thread yesterday and paid particular attention to those who stated that they had 8 or more (some into the big numbers). Now this. This is really helping my quest for a Firebird. "See he got another one." I am not alone. Thanks again .

Oh I see.............It's my fault!!! lol........call me selfish, but the more of you I can bring down with me, the better it is for my collection. lol. Let her know I put another on layaway while picking up this one and that should make one little firebird seem like nothing......lol. NHTom
NHTom Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 Ok this is totally unfair............ Been playing the heck out of the Sonex. Have the above special on layaway.......went in to make a payment on it and what is there now? Nice double cut special...........ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!! Had to let it pass even though I've been after one. Just can't get that strung out on guitars.......lmao. C'mon lottery check!!!! NHTom

NHTom At least for me I can say that it finally always turned out as it should I think. Although I went through lots of annoyance, anger, grief and despair just because of guitars, I never made an unlucky punch up to now so to say. On the other hand, it would be very hard for me to part with one of my guitars or basses, and then there still is one particular 1980 model on my wish list...
NHTom Posted June 7, 2014 Author Posted June 7, 2014 I think my biggest problem is I want them ALL........lol. Oh well......I can't complain......got some great guitars and on my budget definitely can't afford them all.....lol. NHTom

NHTom My very trouble is that I need that many, and luckily I only want those I need. It's a respectable number though.
MrNylon Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Congrats, a very nice acquisition. Best of playing with it. When they call you, It's the right thing to do. I've had a few follow me home too.
Tman Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 but the more of you I can bring down with me, the better it is for my collection. lol. NHTom I'm going down. Down down down down down...........

Girls and boys like us don't do it all for themselves, they do it for tone!
NHTom Posted June 7, 2014 Author Posted June 7, 2014 whew............as long as there is a good reason!!!! NHTom
