tinman1 Posted June 24, 2014 Share Posted June 24, 2014 I think this thread has probably run it's course! I was actually there at the show in Glasgow and saw it all unfold. Jimi Mac is essentially correct- the problem was lack of information leading to 12000 bewildered/ confused/ dissapointed fans. I think the most vocal criticisms are coming from people who have read about it online. Confusion was more prevailant than anger on the night. It probably should have been the road crew who provided that information but it all happened fairly quickly. I'm still a massive Clapton fan and would see him again. Well, our Lime brethren are either very forgetful or they are just being polite and not mentioning some of his more...uhm, colorful outbursts of the late 70's, after say No Reason To Cry on up to Money and Cigarettes, just before the very bad Journeyman time I guess. He really stuck his foot in it quite a few times to the point of being booed off the stage in his own country because of, well, at the time, the usual "Eric is bombed and he's talking politics and race" sort of thing. Money and Cigarettes was the last time I saw him actually, Spectrum in Philly. I took a guitar student who was thrilled to see him of course. They actually gave out packs of Camels at the door, imagine that happening today! He came out, played that record, did a few from the few previous years, nothing from Slowhand, no Dominos, no hard blues, no Cream, nothing like that at all. Never spoke, didn't even say Thank You which was about all I had ever seen him say at a show. He wasn't even off the stage and the lights came up, so it was done when he walked off. That was the first time I've seen him- my impression of what he'd be like live was all based on his DVDs- unplugged, Hyde Park, MSG with Steve Winwood etc where he was more engaging. To be honest I came to see a genius play guitar and genuinely wasn't dissapointed by his or the bands playing at all (from a musical point of view). Would I have prefered a 2hr-2.5 hour set? buliwyf Posted June 24, 2014 Share Posted June 24, 2014 I havent been to a real concert for some time,just a few bar sized local gig's.How much does a ticket for Clapton cost these days,I would think something that size was reserved seating.Sir Paul McCartney was here a bit ago and a friend went with a guy who asked her I should have asked what those tickets cost,gotta be over a hundred bucks I would guess.I think the $12.00 I paid for seeing Boston in the 70,s is a bit out of date. Face value for Glasgow was £60 per ticket (about $100 I think) although my wife bought the tickets for double that for my birthday as we couldn't get good tickets initially. Riffster Posted June 24, 2014 Share Posted June 24, 2014 I saw him here in Des Moines back when he was a youthful 80. He sat the entire gig and he talked more than he played & I still didn't care. He was worth every nickel. Even all those nickels it cost me to buy my very own Lucille the next day. Itoo saw BB King on his 80th Birthday Bash tour and he played at the most 4 songs, I was dissapointed, not sure why he played so little other than Montel Williams oversealousness (he was the show presenter but wanted to take part so bad that he interfered a lot) At some point when Montel was clapping at a different time signature than the song Bobby Bland told him "you made me forget even what key we are playing on" Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

flyingfrets Posted June 25, 2014 Share Posted June 25, 2014 Saw EC on the "Crossroads" tour at the Philladelphia Spectrum in '88. Mark Knopfler on second guitar. Amazing show. 25 years of hits played by 2 masters of the instrument. Solid 2 1/2 hour show. Clapton played one of the most insane solos I've ever heard him play when they gave "Money For Nothing" a workout as part of the encore. Blew Knopfler away on his own song. Worst show I ever paid money for had to be the night in 2009 I dropped $440 to see the original Bad Company play for 45 minutes & a 15 minute encore. Not their fault. The band was actually smokin' hot. The VENUE pulled the timing bull$h!t because they had another event booked for the room (it was a casino) later that evening. Read they'd played almost 3 hours the night before in Virginia Beach. Guess the big boys all have an "off" night now & then...just like we do.
