Noel Gallagher from Oasis with an Epi Les Paul

Recommended Posts

Well that certainly didn't last long, did it?

He moved on to Gibby Les Pauls soon after that though he obviously used Sheraton's for awhile.

I see no Epi's among his gear any longer, as he's always using his 345 and 355 when I see him playing electric.

Love Oasis though. Love the two bands now since the split as well, but I do hope they get back together sometime.

What I love from Noel is the fact that he can write amazing songs using simple chords or things like that, he's not a complex musician and I like that,

And you're right, that epi les paul didn't last long but he used another epis in later gigs, like this:

And other Oasis members also used the epis: http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/979/bonehead.jpg

Nothing wrong with Epiphones, and no reason to not use them.

Seems as though there is a societal paradigm causing subconscious pressure to abandon Epi's (& other affordable quality manufacturers) at some point in favor if more "professional grade" instruments, even though they are likely not much better if at all.

I'm guessing that were Noel to make an album using nothing but Epiphones no one would be able to tell. ;)

Both of the Riviera`s, that Noel and "Bonehead" played were 1980`s Matsumoku (Japan) models (Not 70`s as quoted). Noels had a November 83 serial number 3114107. Apparently he no longer owns the guitar, although Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs still has his sunburst one, although I haven`t got the serial for that.

The "Union jack" and sunburst Sheraton`s that Noel owned were both 90`s Terada (Japan) models, and not 60`s originals, as often said. The tell tale giveaway detail is the block markers going all the way up the fretboard, you don`t find that on Kalamazoo and Matsumoku Sheraton`s.

Steve.

The UJ Sheraton was a 1996 USA model whilst the sunburst Sheraton was custom built for Noel in 1995/6. Note that he added extra fret markers on both of these.

He stopped playing the Epi LP because Johnny Marr loaned him an old cherry sunburst Gibby LP Standard. There was a brawl at a gig, fans stormed the stage, and Marr's LP was broken. Noel called him up and managed to get Marr to lend him another guitar and he loaned him a Gibby LP Custom. He still hasn't given it back.

Noel started using Epiphones because the Beatles played them. In the early days he also played a cherry red 70s Epi Riviera like this

As for Epiphones being 'cheap alternatives', Noel mostly played the high quality models - 1983 Matsumoku Rivieras and new USA-made and vintage models. The Les Paul and EJ200 were stock 90s Korean models though.

Interestingly he actually started playing the Gibson semis alongside the Epiphones back in 1997, in this case his sunburst Sheraton.
