jimmy77611
I just started recording with my Les Paul studio, and for some reason, I cannot play an open e power chord. The E string goes severely out of tune no matter how easy i strum. Sounds perfect if fretted. Intonation and neck are set perfectly, and string is perfectly in tune. I did notice that the string seems too small for the slot on the nut, and can move side to side. Could this be the problem? If i tune the string where it sounds good on open e, it's out of tune when fretted.

Seriously, if you can get a good pic of the nut, it'd be helpful (for future people too!). It sounds like your problem. Are you using a 38 for your low E? tulsaslim
Spend $100 and have the Buzz Feiten tuning system installed. Your troubles will be over.
95vette
I second the Buzz Feiten recommendation. I had that on a Les Paul Custom and currently on a acoustic, it makes a big difference, especially on acoustic. If your string is moving side to side and you want to keep the factory nut, you'll need someone to fill the nut slot and recut it.
Oyster
Doesn't really answer his question, huh?
Raptor
There could be several causes for this. Too much finger pressure when playing, the string not stretched properly, a bad string, uneven fret somewhere. The string should fit comfortably in the nut slot, if it is sitting on top of the nut, then you are stretching it further when you fret it. This might be the cause. Your best bet is to have someone take a look at it for you. Without at least a picture of how the string is sitting on the nut, it is hard for us to offer a definite suggestion. telecasters
Also..... make sure your strings are properly stretched before you play them. I spend quite a few minutes pulling on the string in the middle of the guitar. (but not too firmly!) Usually between the bridge and neck pickup. A wound string can take a long time to tune and re-tune if you don't stretch them properly before gigging. Hope this helps.
