Hey,

One thing I've never understood is this: If the Les Paul is the most iconic gibson guitar right now why is the sg the best selling gibson model? Can someone please explain this to me?

source?

Scanning the web for an answer, found two top lists. Looks like many wants the LP, the Epi version seems to be doing alright. No sign of SG though...

Nice start for your research but these lists are current sales. I have also heard that Gibson has sold more SG's too but cannot figure out where I heard that.

I did see other sources claiming Gibson has made more SG's than any other model including this list here:

I think its cos of the Les Pauls heritage... It was one of the first ever solid body designs along with the Strat. Plus all of the famous guitarists that have used them over the years to create some of the most classic rock sounds ever..

And Les Paul himself. :)

I LOVE SG's, that's no secret. It is ironic, to me at least, that the Les Paul portion

of this forum gets probably 5-10 times as much traffic, and postings, as the SG forum.

WHY?! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Les Paul's, too! But, after 40 years, of not owning

an SG (30 years I didn't play at all, and only recently, when Gibson went back to their

own original spec's (wider bevels and horn tapering) like the early 60's SG's), have I gotten

back into SG's...in a BIG way! Why now? Well, basically for the reason already stated.

I didn't care that much, for the versions from '70 on, with less beveling, and no horn tapers!

Some "Norlin" era SG's had almost no beveling, to none in some areas. That "killed" every

thing about the SG that I loved, for a long time. But, with the '61 reissue, and finally

the "Original," and "61 Les Paul Tribute" they're back. The "Captain" Kirk Douglas SG

Custom is an AWESOME version, of the SG Custom of the late '60's, even with it's Rosewood

board.

So, there's LOTS of SG Love, once again, in this house! [thumbup][biggrin]

Well... my SG Standard is a lovely guitar. I've owned a couple of Les Pauls (still own one) and they're so beautiful and iconic, BUT... my SG is light, has a great neck with easy access to the top frets, and the classic 57s absolutely rock. If I had to own just one guitar, I honestly think I'd choose my SG.

I have always loved the look of the SG's - those 1960's models just look so 'right' - it's amazing to me to think that they could just make them so perfectly shaped and styled right from day one - when I look at all designs that have come and gone since, the SG stands out as the best styled guitar of all.

.... that 'n Angus.

All love for SG's aside, in the right hands, any decent guitar can be awesome! [thumbup]

But, after playing Les Paul's, and ES-series Gibsons, for years, I still tend to favor

the SG, now that it's returned to my guitar "arsenal." And, for all of the affore mentioned

reasons, and (maybe?) just that indefinable affinity one has, for any particular guitar, style

or brand. [biggrin]

I think that the Les Paul is a better instrument (all things being equal) but the SG is the one which would end up getting the most playing time.

I know I started that Anti-GAS thread but you really need to get one of each...
