You're right, that is not a Custom, they almost always have square inlays on the neck. The knobs are usually never black on a Les Paul with that color scheme. And, as you state, the pickups are probably not original. It does have the look of a Standard, not sure when they were making Classics. That three-piece birdseye top is pretty unusual though. Also, what do you mean by "screws?" You can post more pics if you set up a Photobucket or Flickr account, you can post the code or links here and put up a lot of pics.
