Fly Navy Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Over the recent 2014 Labor Day weekend sale, I ordered a Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe II '60s Neck Flame Top (a Guitar Center Exclusive) for my son's birthday with delivery to the store. Picked it up the day after Labor Day, took it home, and unboxed it. It is a beautiful guitar. While making a file to store the receipt, documentation, and serial number, I noticed the guitar was made in 2013. I felt a little deceived since this is the latter part of 2014 and I received a 2013 model. To be fair, it did not state the model year on the website, just "Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe II '60s Neck Flame Top Electric Guitar" I called Guitar Center and explained the situation, the manager was polite but said the model was not made in 2014. The manager basically said, " You got a good deal, you can either keep it or return it." I paid $899, the Labor Day sales price plus a 10% military discount. Questions: 1) Did Gibson actually make a production run in 2014 for the Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe II '60s Neck Flame Top? 2) If so, should I return the 2013 for a 2014 assuming the specs are the same? Opinions please.
deeman Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Go to the website and it'll show you all the current production models. But you sure did get a great deal! It's still a new guitar and a great guitar so i wouldn't sweat it. If there's a problem with the guitar then by all means send it back, but if not, i'd keep it.
VaCreeper Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 There great guitars, For that price I'd keep it for sure.
tabeck5 Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Keep it, that is a lot of guitar for very little money. I think the 2013 models were pretty much good across the board.
Rabs Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Is there a reason you specifically wanted a 2014 model? If not and your issue is that you just wanted a new one then id say what the hey... As long as its a good guitar it doesn't matter what year it was made as long as its in new condition and working properly.. In fact A LOT of people don't want to buy the 2014 models as they have an unusual 120th logo at the twelfth fret which has put a fair few people off them totally this year..... And you got it at a great price which is a bonus
casey_vee Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I'd say enjoy your guitar, but still submit an online review to let people know you were slighted, that way in the future if it really DOES matter to someone about the year, they'll have a heads up from someone who went through it already. Help thy fellow man.
Guest Farnsbarns Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 IMO, to be frank, you'd have to be nuts to reverse that deal over the manufacturing date. Remembering the serial is printed before the finish goes on, depending on when in 2013 that guitar was made they've probably on had it a few months. I hate the anniversary logo so had I been in the market I would happily have paid a premium for a 13 model.
IanHenry Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Hi, I've seen "new" guitars in stores that can be many years old, one of my Les Paul's was 3 years old when I got it (I consider that guitar as a lucky find) and I even came across a ten year old but new ES 335. Unfortunately the shop selling it did not offer it at the ten year old price! Ian
capmaster Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Keep it, that is a lot of guitar for very little money. I think the 2013 models were pretty much good across the board. Definitely. I found not a single 2013 Gibson I wouldn't have liked. Guitars get better with age, and trying a new old stock instrument set up nicely for a longer period will tell you more about what it will be like in the long run, compared to a very fresh one. I bought some 2011 NOS Gibsons in 2013, and all of them are great. There might be duds left in the stores nobody wants because they are duds, but most of these just didn't meet the player whose name is on them before. Buying a guitar is a matter of sensible evaluation as well as of taste.
Fly Navy Posted September 5, 2014 Author Posted September 5, 2014 After consulting with Gibson Customer Service and the factory, they (Gibson), confirmed that both the 50's and 60's neck version of the Les Paul Studio Deluxe II model are no longer in production. So, that relieved any concerns I had regarding the year it was manufactured. I'm absolutely keeping it. It is a beautiful guitar and I'm sure my son will enjoy every minute playing it. Thanks everyone for your responses. A non-musician dad

GibsonKramer Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Yeah, your son is going to be very happy with it. Congrats to both of you. You'll feel like a million bucks, watching him progress and enjoy it.
deeman Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Boy i wish my dad got me an LP! I guess i'll just have to be the giver (hopefully) to my son one day.
IanHenry Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 FlyNavy, I think you've made the right choice, and I'm sure that your Son will love it whatever the year, after all, it's a genuine Les Paul, say no more! Regards, Ian

Thanks everyone for your responses. A non-musician dad Great decision. You still get the warranty from Gibson anyway. For what it's worth, I got a Les Paul Studio Shred in April of this year. I am the first owner, but it was made in 2012. ;)
