Considering buy this 1972 Les Paul - its in great shape BUT...... the neck color and body color are really different. Buying from a very reputable seller - and the guarantee its not refinished and the that BOTH neck and body are Mahogany. I dont doubt them (seller) the least... I just wonder...

1. Has anyone see this before??

2. Does it hurt the value?

3. Does it effect the sound -- is the lighter neck wood "less dense"???

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP

The colour of a specific piece of timber will always depend on the individual tree trunk. Body and neck blanks were just cut from different logs. Density and colour may vary independently from each other. I think there's no reason for worrying about the value.

As for tone, each piece of wood will contribute its own character. I don't think that colour shadings as such make for a "better" or "worse" tone.

By the way, the Deluxe you have in mind looks very pretty. [wub] I guess it's a keeper. There also are not so many out there with "Gibson" engraved on the pickup covers.

I wouldn´t worry at all, agree with Cap and i think it looks really cool!

I love the old ES guitars in natural finish, with the redish neck and yellowish body, i think this one have a similar look but the other way around, beautiful.

Congrats on your decision, and in advance on this nice guitar. [thumbup] I hope she will arrive in fine condition. Keep us posted, please.

I thought many of the Norlin era Les Pauls came with a Maple neck on the Mahogany body, and that could certainly account for a lighter shade on the neck and it is a denser wood making it stronger and giving it more stability...

I didn't look closely enough at this one to know if it is one of those Maple necks or not, but I'm pretty sure many of them of that era did...

If not then what the others have said of different blanks of wood having different shades is probably the simple truism. Mahogany itself varies alot and is all over the spectrum.

Not only are different boards/pieces going to finish differently, but different sections of the same board/piece can look very different with the same exact finish...
