Guitar Man'66 Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I've just taken off the strings on my new 2014 LP and noticed there's a fine almost hair line crack appeared in the lacquer around the A string peg..It's virtually a full circle..Any ideas how this has happened,so when I take it back to the store I know what I'm talking about...
capmaster Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Sorry, I never saw any clearly circular crack before. May it be it is there from the start, and you just noticed it while restringing? My only idea is that a tool or a finger did that during mounting or retightening the machine head. It looks suspiciously well centered around the peg axle.
Riffster Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Looks like a string end made a scratch when the tuner was turned. You should be able to buff it out.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I think you've got it right Riffster So pleased I didn't go barreling into the store demanding a new guitar...haha It's hard to see on the pic Capster but there is deviation in the circle..my first thought was the same as yours it was a fault on the head itself...but the scraping of the string seems quite obvious now though I've never had it happen before.. What should I use to buff it out?
Riffster Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Not sure as I can't gauge the depth of the scratch but you can start by rubbing your thumb on it and see if that works. Otherwise you'll have to use some type of polish.
Rabs Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Yeah id say string scratches too... Gibson do a pretty good polish...
surfpup Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 You're supposed to bend those string ends up before you wind them ya know.
brc Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 You can use a 3M polishing compound which is a very fine polish. Or you can use a 5,000 grit up to an 8,000 grit sand paper which is used as the last step before the polish is used. Most auto paint supply stores carry the 3M polish and the 5,000 grit paper, but for the 8,000 grit you have to go a paint specialty shop. I use Coast Airbrush in Anahiem Ca for all my supplies. They carry every thing you need. Just Google Coast Airbrush Anahiem Ca. They will ship to you door.
LarryUK Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 It's not a uniform circle, which says to me it's not a string scratch. I'd say it was the tuner nut overtightened.
