ocdman Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 I picked this amp up recently from guitar center for 299 bucks. Its a carvin Mts 3200 100 watt head. It sounds great. I ordered the footswitch for it from carvin.I am thinking about changing the tubes I dont know how long they have been in there. It can take 6L6 or EL34. It has 6L6 in it now. I will probably use JJs for the power tubes> thats what i usually use. I also usually use them for the preamp tubes to.Im thinking about trying different brands for the preamp tubes. any suggestions?

HNAD!! Do you run that into four or eight 12 inch speakers? I can't offer any suggestions because I have never heard any Carvin product and don't know anyone that has one and the closest I have ever gotten to a Carvin product was a picture in a magazine... I would be interested in trying their guitars and amps.
joevacc Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Talking tubes on the internet is a bit of a mine field and I usually steer clear of it! LOL So my disclaimer is that I know noting about tubes! I have only had tube amps all my life and in the old days I did not give one iota of thought to tubes. If one went bad I changed it without regard to anything other than the right tube for the socket. I didn't even know when I was young 'matched pairs' was a thing! That said, I have recently put PM valves in my Vox AC15. and am quite happy with the result. They are much better than the originals with regard to tightness and punch. They way they distort is much smoother and again, tighter - If that makes sense. The high end is not as 'brittle' as the originals and the low end is much more defined. The other brand that I considered is Sovtek. They have been making tubes all along. When these PM valves that I am using now start to go, I am going to buy a set of Sovtek's. I should have got them in the first place but the amount of gushing o the internet about Peter Watson of PM Tubes got the best of me. I am very happy with them but again tubes are like strings…. "To each his own" Good luck with your quest. jv I picked this amp up recently from guitar center for 299 bucks. Its a carvin Mts 3200 100 watt head. It sounds great. deeman Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 $300 bucks seems like a good deal for a 100 watt tube head. Never heard this amp but if you like the way it sounds then enjoy it!!! I would def change out the power tubes since its used. JJ 6L6 is what I use.
10K-DB Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 My brother has many Carvin products,,amps,,"Bolt" gtr kits,,basses,,they make great stuff
Thunderchild Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I don't think you'll be disappointed, I've got Carvin amps, mics, fret less bass, powered mixer, speakers, wireless systems, etc. All of them are great. A Carvin Bel Air tube amp is my #1. Hope you enjoy it TC
LPguitarman Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I remember drooling over Carvin Amp catalogues when I was a teenager. Congrats.
badbluesplayer Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 You can't go wrong with all JJ's, to keep things simple.
bonzoboy Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I wouldn't go through the expense of putting new tubes in the amp unless it sounded like the present tubes are shot.I've bought used amps and have used them for years with the tubes that were in them when I bought them.If I had an amp with the 6L6 0r EL-34 option,I'd definitely opt for the EL-34s and Mullards at that-to try and get as much of the Brit vibe that I could.
