IanHenry Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I've only just found this on You Tube. I've never fancied a Firebird before, but those look rather nice. Pity it hasn't got a G Force tuner http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22fs7yWEXvc Ian
SteveFord Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Those guys are pretty silly, all right. In light of the current 2015 price increase, I'll tell my Firebird story: last year I was all hot to buy a new Firebird even though the tuners are butt ugly and they chintzed out and got rid of the nibs. They did add cryogenically treated frets so that's a good thing so I figured what the heck, that offsets the loss of the nibs. It was a Friday night and the following morning I was going to run down to Guitar Center and buy a new tobacco sunburst 2014 Firebird V. A big day for me! Saturday morning I got up early and went onto Gibson's site to read about my upcoming purchase on the Firebird page (kind of like a kid at Christmas) and sonofa*****, they raised the price $300 while I slept! Maybe I need more coffee, it can't be, yes it can be, I can't believe it, the dirty... After I got done doing a little further recreational cursing I was too mad to go down and buy a 2014 at any price SO I went onto eBay, found a mint 2013 and for $1100 it was delivered to my doorstep right into my fat little fingers. How is it? It's really, really nice - it sounds great, the neck is really fast with low action and it's a beauty. They went a little overboard with the clear coat up on the headstock but other than that, it's perfect. Once you figure in tax and gas for the trip I saved around $775 AND I got the missing nibs as well. They did me a favor with the price increase. My only complaint is that it feels a bit lighter than I like; it feels to be about a pound lighter than an ES-335 so I'd prefer the Firebird had a bit more heft to it. Other than that, it's a wonderful guitar. It has the best sustain of any of my Gibsons and the whole design is just so cool. Some people say that the guitar is too long for them but for me, it's just right. You do have to take care so you don't smash the head stock into anything as it really sticks out there. The tuners are still ugly as warts but they work really well and have kind of grown on me. Here's one of my patented crummy guitar photos: I'm saving up for my next guitar purchase which will be an older Firebird VII; I stupidly sold mine a few years back and I miss the giant old thing.

Steve, thats a beauty. I've been wanting a Firebird for quite some time now. a few weeks back when I bought my SG, for the 1st time, instead of saying "so are you done now ?", my wife asked "so whats next ?". without missing a beat I said"a Firebird" ... someday.
SteveFord Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Thanks, I really like this one. I've yet to hear anything bad about the 2013 Firebirds so maybe one is in your near future? I think it would compliment an SG perfectly! I'm going to try a 2015 to see how that zero fret nut/wider neck/lower frets bit works out but now they've jumped up to two grand so that's not coming home with me. Correction: I've heard about rough finishes with the 50th anniversary gold ones so you might want to inspect one in person before you buy.

AndyK Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 I have a 2013 Firebird V - excellent guitar. However, I am considering selling at least one of my guitars, in order to purchase a custom-built one.
saturn Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Pity it hasn't got a G Force tuner Ian You had to go there! But seriously, maybe the design doesn't work with in-line tuners.
SteveFord Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 I'm sure they'll find a way to add some battery operated gadgets to it sooner or later. It's funny how Karloff bought an SG and then is going to do a Firebird next and after I replace my Firebird VII I'll go for an older SG or two. I'm seeing a pattern here...
Ryan H Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 You had to go there! But seriously, maybe the design doesn't work with in-line tuners. The company that makes it, Tronical (the actual product is called Tronical Tune) offers versions for many other types of guitars, including 6-in-line for Fender and similar. -Ryan

I saw a used Firebird on Guitar Center for $999. Wish I had the $.

Steve, Beautiful guitar. Congratulations. Last year I was about to purchase one as well. The shop I go to had a Custom Shop Factory second model. It had a few blemishes. Nothing serious. It was going for just under 3 bills. It played BEAUTIFULLY and was actually very comfortable to play . I bought a 2014 Les Paul Traditional instead. But nonetheless that Firebird was GORGEOUS. Once again, congratulations and ENJOY your guitar. Kidest Regards, MississippiBlue
SteveFord Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Thank you, they're such unique guitars, there's nothing else that's really quite like them. Now if only I could play 1/5 as well as Johnny Winter could I'd be all set!

By the 5th song I thought "I've gotta get a SG".lol
