Interesting song selection. I like that J-45 sound, perhaps its your attack, or the aging of strings, but it has a great woody tone.

I liked it but I think I would have changed the words a bit and sung it as the boy in the song like this

She was born in the wagon of a travelin' show

Her mama used to dance for the money they'd throw

Papa would do whatever he could

Preach a little gospel

Sell a couple bottles of doctor good

[Chorus:]

Gypsies, tramps andthieves

They'd hear it from the people of the town

They'd call them gypsies, tramps and thieves

But every night all the men would come around

And lay their money down

They picked me up just south of Mobile

Gaveme a ride, filled me with a hot meal

She was sixteen, I was twenty-one

Rode with them to Memphis

Her papa would of shot me if he knew what I'd done

[Chorus]

She never had schoolin' but I taught her well

Withmy smooth southern style

Three months later, She’s a gal in trouble

And she hasn't seen me for a while, oh

She hasn't seen me for a while, oh

She was born in the wagon of a travelin' show

Her mama hadto dance for the money they'd throw

Grandpa'd do whatever he could

Preach a little gospel

Sell a couple bottles of doctor good

Cheers Dan.Yea the guitar as recorded is pretty much as it sounds.Very nice woody tone. The strings are old..at least 12 months.

Thanks Dave. Good point about the lyrics. Your gender specific version scans nicely.I did actually think about doing something similar.

There are cases where songs are written from the opposite gender point of view as well.Like

John Prine's Angel from Montgomery.."i am an old woman, named after my mother".

But generally people do tend to change the lyric as you suggested.

images of you straddling a huge navy gun surrounded by sailors FB. Kinda disturbing.

I had to re-read the thread title, thinking to myself 'Cher? surely not'

but, by jove , you did a cher cover.

Releasing the inner Cher....just be thankful I didn't wear the G string leotard!

I have no YouTube til Wednesday, so I can't listen til then, but I must ask, FB.....

Is this a type of coming out party?

Cool, whatever you like!

Is that your arrangement? If so, nice work. Definitely the coolest version of of the song I have heard. I'm only familiar with Cher's from back in the day.

Trying not to think about the G string leotard.....

haha...sorry boys...the cheezy cover was bad enough..I didn't need to add the traumatic imagery.

yea my arrangement Mr Rex.I was learning it on the uke.The normal guitar tab is Am...makes the bridge too high for me to sing.I've never bothered to transpose.

But the uke version starts in Em.So I thought I see how it sounded on guitar..capoed on 2 for F#m.I can just manage the bridge with a dodgy falsetto.

I just had a listen as promised - real good! (my work computer has Youtube but no sound - the boss of the company didn't get rich by being extravagant on computers, did he? Sorry, Boss, if you are watching, but then i'm already in strife for watching this, so....)

Sounds kind of Dylanesque, I think I am hearing what it would sound like if he tackled the tune.

Maybe the video could be re-shot with some sailors on a boat down thar at Manly (good name!)? Gypsies? err Katoomba or Nimbin maybe?

Just leave it!

Kidding - real good and keep them coming!

Edit: Forgot to mention I like the new capo! Any trouble tuning?

That song has never really been a favorite of mine until now. I'll tell you, FB, your folksy and gritty style make the song far more like a "slice of life" than the way Cher did. For me, this is how the song should be done.

Can't say I've heard of the Epi Elite, may not have been looking... [biggrin]

(I had an Epi EL-00, but the nut was too skinny for my fat fingers and I gave it to a friend to learn lap slide on, with extension nut, and I think he pawned it on the way home from my place!)

Oh, and if you are serious about the G-string and the ship video, FB, I will personally ride my pushbike to Sydney to film it with my video camera! Just say Yay and we are on the way!
