Gibson Artist Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Saw this on CL and noticed it has no name on top, no label inside either. I know the japanese made some martin clones so i dont know if this is real, it looks like a clone to me. Anyone seen this before? http://providence.craigslist.org/msg/4685583083.html
RichG Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Can't tell much from those pictures. You would need to see the neck block. It should have a serial number and say D28. I suppose it is possible that the inlay work was done to a real Martin D28. And no, I haven't seen anything like that before.
j45nick Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Like Rich says. If genuine, should have serial number stamped on the neck block, Plus "C.F. Martin & Co." stamped on the center back strip and/or neck block. If the serial number is there, you can check with Martin to see if the serial number is real, plus what the guitar is and when it was built. Unlike Gibson, I believe Martin has pretty complete records due to their continuity of ownership.
DenverSteve Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 No way to tell from the photos. Go see it if you're interested. That's the beauty of CL, local sales. They say they have all the paperwork. Go check it out against the info stamped in the guitar.
62burst Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Yes, since seller states he has the paperwork, then he's fully prepared to document its authenticity. The bigger question would be the going rate for your basic used D-28 in a private sale. Current market guess: mid-upper teens. The no M logo may actually make for a tougher sale. Check eBay for comparables. Certainly not in the too-good-to-be-true price range a scammer would use.
DenverSteve Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 That too. The price is not a steal but it does have unusual inlay for a D28. It could be a great guitar but make sure there has been no repair on the top (or other places). Check the braces, top, sides & bridge.

I would just rather have the name on the headstock for my own peace of mind and if i chose to sell it would make it tougher which is definately not what i would want.
modoc_333 Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 The Martin name may be on the back of the headstock. they did this on some, particularly slot head models.
slimt Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Yep.. sure is.. I own a few just like that one.. custom shop guitar.. you can order anything you want for additional items if your willing to spend extra..
Smurfbird Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 I swear I saw this styled guitar over at AGF and it was decided it was not a Martin and the Martin experts chimed in over there with a number of obscure and obvious, but correct, reasons. You say you're passing, so that's good. Otherwise, I would search out counterfeits....
E-minor7 Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Sure looks like the real thing, but then again there have been so many qualified M-imitations over the years. But why not imagine Nazareth making a little custom doodling - and then of course check by sending a pic directly to the plant.
DRC Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 A serial number verified (or not) via Martin would certainly provide a definitive answer. DC
E-minor7 Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 I think the rosetta is wrong. The pick-guard placement doesn't look right. You mean the inner ring is missing - perhaps, but I can't see anything wrong about the p-guard position.
