Rabs Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 I know there are a few builders on here and was wondering whats the best sort of glue for binding? I know Gibson use an ABS or plastic cement type of glue that melts the plastic into the grain of the wood... But ive also seen that some say Titebond works well as well as CA glue (which is basically superglue)... So I was wondering if anyone had done it before and what sort of glue you use or recommend. Cheers :)
Rabs Posted October 13, 2014 Author Posted October 13, 2014 I use Duco cement. Ok I will look in to that... Cheers :)
L5Larry Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Just did a binding repair on a 1947 L5. Figuring the guitar was built in '47 with hide glue.... that's what I used. Turned out PERFECT. The repair was completely unnoticeable, and cleanup was a breeze. I doubt there is anybody that could ever spot that as a "repair". I know there are nuclear bonding (literally) adhesives out there these days. Be REAL careful using them on guitars, especially around plastics parts and nitrocellulose lacquer. You may end up with a melted glob of goo.
Guitar God Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I recommend Titebond. I had an issue with my 1982 Les Paul Custom where a small piece of binding on the tip/top of the high string side was cracked a little and it came off. Got some Titebond glue for it as it was recommened by someone who works at one of my local music stores. Works REALLY well. Can't even tell the little piece of binding came off at all whatsoever. Here's the Titebond glue I got incase yyou go to get some and see a couple different types of Titebond wood glue:
Guest Farnsbarns Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 None, just acetone to soften the binding so it sticks itself.
Rabs Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 Ok cool.. cheers for the tips guys.. I will keep looking into this and may just have to do a test or something to see for myself.
