Ohhh... now that's pretty cool.... as much as I dislike aging.. I like the rest of it (well apart from the price of course :)).. And that's a pretty unique pickup combo they have going on there.

Robby Krieger’s 1954 Les Paul Custom became a constant writing companion, workhorse, performing partner, muse, and musical soul mate all rolled into one right from the time he acquired it used in 1968. Nicknamed “L.A. Woman” after its use on that classic track by The Doors, it contributed to many unforgettable hits, and remains in Robby’s possession to this day, a tried and true companion to a career that has continually evolved and inspired over decades. Now, through a close collaboration between Robby and Gibson Custom, a very limited number of hand-crafted replicas of the Robby Krieger 1954 Les Paul Custom will be made available to discerning collectors and players. Full and unrestricted access to the original guitar has yielded Gibson Custom’s luthiers the means of precisely recreating the feel, look and tone of this legendary instrument. And to take it all over the top the first 50 guitars—hand aged by Gibson—will also be played, approved and signed by Robby himself. A further 100 hand-aged guitars will be produced, with the final 150 of the run treated to Gibson Custom’s proprietary VOS process.

Every Robby Krieger 1954 Les Paul Custom is recreated based on hands-on examination, digital scanning, intimate photography, measurement, and study of Robby Krieger’s 1954 Les Paul Custom to insure a playing experience that’s as close to the original as humanly possible. Notable details include the closely matched dish carve and neck profile carve, the accurate ebony fingerboard with aged pearl block markers, accurate vintage multi-ply binding, after-market Seymour Duncan neck pickup, and painstaking hand ageing (150 examples) to match every ding, scuff and check line found in Robby’s guitar. In short, the Robby Krieger 1954 Les Paul Custom puts a guitar that would normally be untouchable into the hands of a limited number of discerning players. Reserve yours now at your authorized Gibson Custom dealer.

Ebony seems to be reserved for those rare and limited guitars. Am I right assuming that Robby Krieger's guitar's neck pickup also has the Seymour Duncan logo embossment?

They also make VOS ones, and I guess the price mentioned refers to those. [crying]

Well I didn't see a VOS one on the page...

But then I wonder why they have chosen a LP for him.. Surely hes an SG man (even if as im sure he did, play a LP on occasion or maybe early in his career?)

Ohh actually... just found this video.. that explains it a bit... He says he used it for recording all the slide work from The Doors.

Quoted from the text quoted in your first post: "And to take it all over the top the first 50 guitars—hand aged by Gibson—will also be played, approved and signed by Robby himself. I clearly remember Robby Krieger being an SG man, too. However, many players play whatever is useful for recording. Perhaps his LP's action was set for dedicated slide use?

Interestingly they use a Nylon (polyamide) nut for authenticity. The Nylon nut on my cheap 1980 Suzuki EL-600, a Japanese set-neck LP knockoff with a hollow "arched" top, is the best performing one on all of my non-Floyd Rose guitars. [thumbup]

Always loved his playing with the Doors, great slide work on the albums...."Strange Days" with the swoops on "Moonlight Drive", "Who Do You Love" off "Absolutely Live". He came up with some classic riffs.

I'd like one! Preferably unaged.

That's a great looking Custom, though I too don't like aged so would opt for the VOS.

I wonder what the deal is with the whole ebony thing and Gibson now? I read an article that said they had some ebony returned recently...and every so often they still use it. Will we ever see guitars like the L4 CES return to ebony? I hope so, it really is a very different wood in terms of feel and tone to the other options.

Yeah, I too thought this guitar was cool and I had been wanting a LP Custom, so...I placed my order a few weeks back on the VOS model. I can't wait to get her. Will post some pics when I get it.

I've seen this model before and I think I may have posted it a while back...

There are some noteable vids of Doors performances where Robby can be seen playing this Les Paul. You can find them on Youtube. Almost essentially all of his slide work in any song he did was played on this guitar...

Hollywood Bowl '68, before he swapped-out the neck pickup for a mini-bucker...

Robby was a major influence on my in high school and his style is unique and of extreme talent! His Flamenco finger-picking style is singularly unique. He was actually Teaching Flamenco guitar at Santa Barbara UCSC when the Doors met and formed...

While he was a seriously consistent SG guy; you can find his awesome Signature '67 SG @ Gibson.com, and in many of the Big catalogs from time to time, he was also known for his slide work of which was this Les Paul...

Robby Krieger always gets 2 thumbs-up in my book! msp_thumbup.gifmsp_thumbup.gif
