AnneS Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 I was back many a row at tonight's concert, but I do believe our old pal was sporting a J35 for many of his go-to's. I've seen him with the J200 before, but I don't recall the J35 when I saw him about a year ago. Nice fit. His stuff never gets old. "Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios..."
DRC Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 Hey Anne, glad you had a chance to see John. Where was the concert? Could you tell if it was a newer J-35 or an older one? I've seen John many times with the D-28 he started out with in Chicago, a couple Guilds, various Gibsons, but not a J-35. How cool! You're right... John or his songs never get old. DC
MissouriPicker Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 I'd love to see Prine again. The guy is a national treasure. Yet, so many folks have never even heard of him, and that's sad. . I sincerely feel sorry for them and especially the younger people who are all wrapped-up with all these celebrity singers.....Anyway, enough of my rant........Annie, you are so right: Prine and his music NEVER get old. Prine is who he is. He's real........I love literally all of his stuff. This has got to be one of my very favorites. He didn't write it, but he could have. Just Prine, a guitar, and a guy with a very subtle harmonica. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0SsSqIxspo
Gasman Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 He's always been my No.1 Singer and Songwriter! Simple and to the point. I guess his old Martin went into retirement
mking Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Yes I would like to know if it was a new J-35. Could you tell Anne?
MissouriPicker Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Damn, Annie! You've got all of us curious now...lol.......I found this on the internet. No doubt it's not an unknown entity among guitar players. Looks like the site hasn't been updated for a couple years..... Anyway, here's some info on John Prine's guitars. He's no stranger to Gibsons. http://www.jpshrine.org/red/gits/
AnneS Posted October 20, 2014 Author Posted October 20, 2014 Ha! Not trying to keep you in suspense- every time I tried to post yesterday, my screen froze up! Yes- a new J35 (even from afar, very light new top, honey-finish on the back and sides, the unmistakeable slope and, of course, the jangly thump). He was awesome, as always- the Spartanburg, SC crowd was weird, tho, with awkward WHOOOO-HOOOO-ings whenever the lyrics got too poignant. Maybe what some old drunks folks need to do when they feel tears coming on. I dunno- but I love him, and yup- that sure was a new J35 in his able hands. "C'mon baby, spend the night with me..." WHOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOO!!! Really?
B1ues Boy Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Love John we all better go see him because you never know how long these great artists will be around with that said I did a advanced YouTube search and there are no sightings of him playing a J-35 yet BUT I'm keeping a look out
jdd707 Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I saw JP in his 2nd concert after the most recent surgery. He was weak but sucked it up and gave a great show. Yeah go see him while you can because sadly he and other greats will be gone soon ... but then so will I!
blindboygrunt Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 http://www.johnprinetickets.com/Video.aspx there's a great video/interview down the page about 'sam stone' and another really great video with rambling jack elliot in the title. what a rogue prine is .
littlejohnny Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Thanks for this thread and MPs post in particular, never heard of Prine nor of Foley. I have a new favorite song, and even one you can play alone on your acoustic guitar.
Mr Moto Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I saw him several years ago at the N.O. Jazz Fest and he would switch between two apparently identical J-200's. Maybe they were in different tunings but the difference between them wasn't obvious.
