Bass pickup cover

Why do they still use it? Especially the Rickenbacker 4003 basses. I know that the original P and J basses had them but like 90 % of the current series don't have the pickup metal cover. I've heard stories about supposedly resting your fingers on it or something, but it's just seems to get in the way. Why the heck would anyone want a huge chunk of metal that gets in the way of your playing?

They do it that way because that's the way it's done. Same reason Gibson uses nitro finished and "easy snap" headstocks.

What it's comes to reissues people expect to see it done the way it's always done. I just pull the pickup and bridge covers off on my basses.

But then some people are able to make it work.
