Dobro conversion

Recommended Posts

My luthier has taken one of my Ovation 6 strings into his workshop, and has taken to mind to convert it into a Dobro (?).

He's keeping the neck and back as same, just taking the front off, re-doing the bracing inside, and then puting a custom made steel front on and a Fisher pickup inside. Also changing the plug to a stereo 1/4 jack.

I swear, if this guy had lived in another time, he would have been Dr. Frankenstein!

But, he's never failed yet, so this should be interesting (lol).

Anybody done anything similar?

It'll probably be an improvement. I have yet to play on Ovation that did not have a cracked, cracking, or warped top.

Sounds like you've had a run of bad luck with them. I've owned them since 1978 and have only had one go sour on me. Total ownership since then has been about 14 so I figure only one is a pretty good run.

Seems odd how they seem to polerize the masses, wonder why that is? I personally love them, there's just so much you can do with them.

Can't wait to see how the conversion turns out, at the very least, it's got to be interesting.
