houndman55
I've noticed that the LPJ and SGJ has the same kind of colour on the pickups like the EMG Active pickups. Regular humbucker have the silverly kind of thing going on. Does anybody know why?
Ryan H
It's just an aesthetic thing. Most covered humbuckers use nickel-silver covers, but they decided to go with a black plastic of some sort for these models. They're regular 490-type Gibson humbuckers underneath. -Ryan
flyingfrets
If I'm understanding you correctly, the black plastic pickup covers (no visible polepieces) were on the 2013 SGJ & LPJ. In 2014 they went to the uncovered (exposed black & cream bobbin) '61 reissue pickups (much better pickup overall IMO). You don't need to worry about them for 2015 - unfortunately, they've been discontinued. It could've been as simple as that being the intended look for those models, but my guess is that injection molded plastic was cheaper than the chromed metal covers. And cost was one of the driving forces in the production of those guitars given that their projected price point was well below a grand. No covers in 2014 was cheaper still. I'm not implying that the SGJ or LPJ were "cheap" guitars. They were outstanding instruments that just didn't happen to be extortionately expensive. I'm more than happy with my 2014 SGJ. stein
The first LP Specials and the "TV" models were a kind of off-white creamy yellow deal no one can describe except to say, "TV yellow". Some age to a mustardy color, or a beige. In the 90's, the color was a definite mustard like Grey Poupon. This is "cable yellow". In the 2000's, it was a real bright version in satin. This is called "HD yellow".
'Scales
If you check out the Gibson website for Les Pauls (and SGs is similar) in the sub-Studio levels for 2013, 2014, and 2015 the changes border on unfathomable. what's going on?? The J's and Melody Maker didn't last long but I'd imagine sold pretty well. A 2013 LPJ with swapped in nickel-silver pu covers and some reflector knobs would have been a sweet deal at $699 plus a few bucks for the aforementioned small changes IMO.
