kidblast
first Band name: Deathwish! (!!LOL!!) 5 peice band, vocalist, guitar, keys, bass, drums.. (I still see some of these guys from time to time,, no one has "left the planet" yet) First gig: it was summer jamboree at Fort Devens in Massachusetts. In June of 1974 In attendance, hundreds of screaming pre adolescents and a bunch of grouchy adult chaperones. I was 17. It was the first time I'd ever been on a stage that big with a huge sound system and staging setup done by one of the Army Band. in a huge gymnasium, it was like playing in the biggest cave on the planet. We opened up with Smoke on The Water, the place went crazy. I knew at that moment, I had to be somehow involved in playing rock and roll for the rest of my life. 40 years later.. yep.. still at it. milod
Kid... You young guys had some real advantages, I think, with those bigger/better sound systems compared to what most of the bands around here had available in the early/mid '60s. We did a show for a state high school basketball tournament in a huge arena in '66, but I've often wondered how much the crowd of some thousands of kids actually heard much more than a roar. Everything was tube, of course... but speaker quality was relatively poor compared to stuff available even in the '70s. Better stuff may have been available, but I never saw anything in the mid '60s that was significantly better. For a rollerskating rink type dance hall it worked half decently, but I wish we'd had more power, more and better speakers, and better sense in how stuff was set up for sound throughout the venue. m
kidblast
-m I know, if that gig wasn't at Fort Devens, that never would have happened. I still remember walking in to gym and gazing at their setup,, we were sort in awe "This is for US??". Those Army band guys were excellent to us. We saw the gates to rock and roll haven, they saw five scared kids walking in with their mouths hanging opened. they must have thought "ha! ya,, we've seen that look before -- been there.." Not a bad way to get a first gig. The singers Dad landed that one for us. he was a freshly retired Army officer, and obviously "had connections"

dustymars
Yeah, we were called Scottie and the Klansman, after our lead singer an piano player (claimed he was of Scottish heritage). After a time some asked where our sheets were so we changed the name. Anyway, other than high school events we played with bands on the North and South Carolina, Florida beaches with Wilber Harrison, and others. Err, that was back in 1958 or so. rocketman
Depends on what you mean. My first gig was probably at the age of 8 playing piano for some school event. I also started playing for choruses around that age. I don't recall too much from that time. Our first band performance came later, which involved me playing guitar. We were probably around 11-12 years old and played at a Greek event at a local college for our church. I learned to play bouzouki parts on the guitar, and we played instrumental Greek music for about an hour. We refused to play Zobra the Greek (too cliché). I actually remember one of the tunes to this day, which I use during my warm ups. It involves some very fast picking. Someday I'll get a bouzouki and do it right. My first rock gig was probably around the age of 13. I have no idea where that was (probably some bar). Here is an early recording. I probably was 14-15 when we recorded this. It's a good thing I'm not easily embarrassed or I would never post this crappy playing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqJ0p9Avgls
