zombywoof
Last night I got together with the "string band" I goof around with. Really a loose knit affair with refugees from other bands wanting a break from their usual fare and friends. Floating lineup and talent is optional. As is not to be unexpected, we don't play out much, only at open air things where there are a ton of other bands on the bill, so we figure we can just have fun and do what we want as chances are nobody will ever hear it. Anyway, we took a break to watch a Doors documentary on the Smithsonian channel. I had a guitar in Open D tuning nearby and picked it up and started to play quietly along with "LA Woman." I think I was more surprised than anything that the tuning worked. Soon everybody started joining in - fiddle, washboard, mandolin, singers, and all. By the time the show was over we had an arrangement of the song. Scary thing is I thought it was one of the best things we had ever done. It really worked. Question is will we remember it next time we get together. This has convinced me I need to have some kind of recording device close by. So guess what I will be asking for for X'mas. 62burst
Cool when stuff like that just spontaneously happens. As far a making a note of it, as is said, sometimes the best tool for the job is the one you have on you at the moment. So; nobody had a cell phone that they could hit the "voice record" button on? ... And then maybe throw up to the SoundCloud? Hint, hint ; ) . MorrisrownSal
I would have loved to hear that man... Doors and Eagles (I know very different...) were my first intros to Rock and Roll in the 70s.

While I do not own one of those phones, I would think somebody had to have one. But nobody seemed to think about recording. It happened so quickly with no thinking going on at all. Who would have thought it would have worked. We started out just playing along with the TV. But they tell me even though I was in Open D I nailed Krieger's solo. Most of the time we do this kind of stuff it is pretty much a throwaway session. We just sat there afterwards grinning saying Whoa, that was really good. If you had added a purple haze floating above us it would have been like 1967. We did not try to do it again, just promising to resurrect it the next time we get together. Their music still only makes sense to me when, well lets just say, its nice living in Colorado....

mountainpicker
That's a great story. I find that the extemporaneous things in making music are the ones I like best. I know what you mean about trying to recapture how you did it. That's not easy, even having it recorded. As for what you might be asking for Christmas? Even after the story I'm guessing a new Gibson guitar, say a big ole SJ-200. I mean, it IS a guitar forum. Might as well go big, regardless. In terms of guitars I would consider it to be an X'mas to be remembered if the repair guy gets my trash can pre-War Regal 12 string back to me.
