natstrat79 Posted December 19, 2014 Share Posted December 19, 2014 I did the self taught thing for a few years and made ok but slow progress. The bad thing about being self taught is that it is too easy to fall in the trap of just learning songs from tablature and not knowing some of the basic music theory behind it. After about 6 years of playing I took lessons for two years. Those lessons catapulted my progress forward compared to the first six. I learned scales and what key I was playing in. Im now better equipped to learn songs by ear when the tab fails or there is no tab. My timing is better for having practiced with a metronome and I just enjoy playing even more now.
