SteveFord
Rather like Mink Oil which has nothing to with the animal other than the name?
Aster1
snip I've never seen, used, smelt or dealt real lemon oil. Somebody show me a fretboard cleaner that doesn't have mineral oil in it. Cummon - I dare you! Yes, mineral oil IS in all Natural Non-Toxic lemon oils. From what I've learned with lemon oil & wood is it has better properties for treatment for the wood vs. mineral oil only. Mineral oil won't hurt anything on the fretboard or bare wood even. Just doesn't clean the wood or leave as lasting an effect on the wood is all I'm meaning. From what I've seen with a variety of wood treated, esp. more exotic woods, the wood grain & glow is better IMHO. Aster
Rabs
I was going through some of my old build pics and found this pic which I think illustrates the point of what it does quite nicely :) (and of course many of the products available out there).. In this case the fretboard had been around a fair bit of sawdust and had been worked on but it was free of dust, just very dry.. but you can see how effective it is at cleaning and freshening the board up

I have been using Dr. Ducks Axe wax for over 20 years. I do believe that it's the best stuff on the market. I just bought my 2nd bottle. The stuff lasts for ever. It does a great job of cleaning and conditioning. I have not tried the the Fret Doctor products but I have been using his bore oil and cork grease on my vintage clarinets for years. He is a mad scientist and I know his products are superior. Over at a woodwind forum I used to frequent he would contribute regularly and he really has dug into the science of the matter. My father, who has been playing guitar for at least 60 years swears by lemon oil. I am sure any one of you would gladly accept any of his Gibsons, Martins or Fenders as great examples. All this reminds me of the motor oil treads on the motorcycle forums. I love them!

Well the thing is that even though this thread is call Lemon Oil Rules, really there are of course many products out there that do a good job.. and all lead to much the same result.. that the wood gets a bit of moisture that penetrates the wood and freshens the appearance up.. plus lemon oil smells nice :) As for which product is the best or not.. I think its all much a muchness....

Aster1
snip: All this reminds me of the motor oil treads on the motorcycle forums. I love them! I love to read all those on the Harley Forum too!! Some almost would "rather fight than switch" like the old Tareyton commercials. Commercial Aster
