Modding a Boss DS-1

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine (the very talented Mike "Smitty" Smyth of MJS Custom Pickups) noticed I was building guitar effects pedals, and he had a DS-1 that he wasn't quite happy with. As documentation of various mods are available all over the internet, I thought I'd take a shot at it.

In this case, I'll be giving it the "K" type mods (you can probably guess what that is). I'll also be converting it to True Bypass, as he's using this pedal mainly to demo his pickups, and he doesn't want any buffers altering the tone in bypass.

Here's the board after most of the to-be replaced components have been removed. Still need to remove the FET switching components and such.

Since I'm going for true hardwire bypass, a 3PDT is a requirement. Bent the lugs slightly to help them clear the components on the board.

Will it fit?

Success.

Note the customized "headless" footswitch. (This isn't a "Compact" variant, it's a full-sized 3PDT switch with the cap removed)

More updates to come...

Very cool, I have to work on a couple of my pedals that are giving me trouble, my own fault due to sloppy soldering.

I did fix a 42" plasma a friend gave me for free, I changed two capacitors and the thing is back up running...like I need another TV
