Gregg Allman - I'm No Angel

I saw the Gregg Allman band live during that era.

I always thought "Dangerous" Dan Toler was an exceptional guitarist.

That was right before The Allman Brothers Band got back together, but that left Dan Toler out in the cold apparently...

I don't know the details but I think it had something to do with some big Cocaine bust on The Allman Brothers of the era that involved Gregg that put Dan Toler as the odd-man-out when they reunited... I don't remember if the rift was between Dickey and Dan or Gregg and Dan. It's tough to figure out because at times Dan Toler played with both outside of The Allman Brothers. He came onboard a little while after Duane's death, and then played with both Great Southern and Gregg Allman after. Not sure where he is these days...

I know Dickey already had Warren Haynes in The Dickey Betts Band from Government Mule during the same era with the "Pattern Disruptive" album that was fantastic... When Dickey reunited w/Gregg he brought Warren onboard with him and maybe there just wasn't room for Dan, I just don't know...

He was in and out of the Allmans, Enlightened Rogues for sure, not sure how many others. I probably saw him halfa dozen times with them. After Greggs solo stuff he was there as well, I used to have some old VHS of them in Florida, mid 80s, with the Tolers. He was in this most recent version of Great Southern.

He died a couple years ago.

Doh!

Now I do recall he was having some serious health issues or had been paralyzed or nearly so or something like that as bits and pieces come back to me. I don't recall all the details though...

I saw Jack Pearson with The ABB, that was a spectacular treat!!!

Yes! I only saw a few with Jack, but some of the best since the Chuck Levell days.

I saw Gregg Allman open for SRV in 1988 or 89. Whenever "I'm No Angel" was current. He was really good, but many people in the crowd were moaning and groaning because he wouldn't play ABB songs.

That's really weird because when I saw him they did several staple ABB tunes...

One Way Out, Whippin' Post, Every Hungry Woman, Don't Want You No More-It's Not My Cross To Bear... (the last two ABB songs in that list, always played togther, were also on that I'm No Angel album, some special releases of that album also included bonus tracks one of which was, if memory serves correct; "Every Hungry Woman" which I believe was on mine on cassette) They lit the place up with classic ABB stuff and mixed-in about 50% of his recent solo stuff...

I got a good look at "Dangerous" Dan Toler that night and he was takin' names and kickin' @ss...

Gregg came out from behind the keyboards and played a little guitar hisself too...

They brought some local talent up on stage when they did "One Way Out." It was a really good show, and full of ABB stuff, not just The Gregg Allman Band tunes...

Now that I think about it, maybe it was just "Midnight Rider" he didn't play, that some people were *****ing about? :-k

That makes sense, I've seen people freak-out and start crap when they don't do One Way Out or other stuff too...

It sucks when fans/audience thinks and acts like the performers owe them something specific...
