cody78
After being after a Puerto Rican Cuatro for a long time, I finally got one today. It has a great sound and was quite inexpensive. The tuning is BEADG and it's a double course instrument, with a total of 10 strings. The photo below isn't mine as I haven't taken pictures of it yet, but it is the exact same model and looks identical. Anyone else here play one? Very cool and unique instrument. 'Scales
a great friend of mine has one (currnetly in for bridge repair) and he loves it - good fun as a diversion. cool sounds as a variation from the usual mandolin or similar.
4Hayden
Never heard of a Puerto Rican Cuatro but it looks cool , I wouldn't mind having one to toy around with.
cody78
When I was looking for mine there were a few on US websites and they were only a couple of hundred dollars. Outside of Puerto Rico they seem quite hard to find, especially authentic PR made ones. I found mine in a UK based Folk & World Music shop which specialise in all sorts of unusual instruments, however it wasn't made in Puerto Rico. The neck on it feels similar to a classical guitar with a very short scale and with the BEADG tuning it's quite easy to learn as a guitarist. It's sound is somewhere between a mandolin and a 12 string guitar.
Drog
That Cuatro is very cool. Never seen one before. You can get this Inuk from Godin http://www.godinguitars.com/godininukencorep.htm Seems like a similar kind of idea, though its 11 string (either steel strings or nylon). Kinda like an Oud
