L5Larry
The posted vid is from March '76, here's some of the photos I took at a December 1976 show. Probably the same "tour". And then the plane crashed!!!!!
Fatstrat
For all Skynyrd fans. Ed King who was one of Skynyrd's original guitarist. And who invented the riffs to many of their biggest hits such as "Sweet Home Alabama" , is very active on Facebook. He doesn't allow just anyone to post on his page. Pretty much reserved for his friends. But you can view his page and all his pics. And the pics that his friends post there etc. A lot of whom were other Skynyrd insiders/friends/family etc. And captions and discussions they post on the pics can be fascinating. Lots of unpublished personal pics of band members at Hell House, or various activities & venues.

Fatstrat
Didn't he "quit" by just exiting a hotel bathroom window and not coming back? rct Not sure how it exactly went down. But from I've gathered from discussions on his FB page, he left for several reasons. 1st, he was the only "outsider" in the band. All the other guys were from the same area of Jacksonville and had grown up together. And that was kind of a little club that despite his contributions, he couldn't break into. Another was Ronnie Van Zant's violent nature. Already a feared local tough when he simply walked into the practice session of an already establish garage band and proclaimed "I'm your new singer". He ruled the band with an iron fist. And beat up virtually every member of the band except for Steve Gaines. Who's talents he highly respected and knew that the band needed to stay. Ed just wasn't willing to take any more beatings from Ronnie. And last but not least was the hard partying lifestyle. I think Ed got in a bit high over his head and for his own sanity & health had to pull out. These are just "my impressions", so don't take them as fact. Although I know that some are. rct
I've never heard the "beatings" stuff before. They were a pretty tough, hard partying bunch, like most southern rock bands of that time. Ed King did ditch them out some window, bus, motel, something, hospital maybe. rct

But I've never heard anything about going out a window. Another aspect of their regard for his contributions (he wrote the riffs & leads for most of their most popular songs) was that they then tried to screw him out of his royalties. He had to sue to get them, and won.
rct
Ed King, from Classic Bands.com, about quitting Skynyrd: "Well, I was out of my mind for quitting. But, it was the best thing I ever did. We signed with a new manager in New York and the manager didn't really have a clue as to what the band was about. He was interested in Ronnie only. He was kind of like putting wedges between...well, he put a wedge between me and Ronnie for sure. Ronnie was drinking a lot. It was just an unpleasant situation. I never drank, but I was into drugs pretty good. I had gotten fed up with frankly all the violence. Our new manager used to tell Ronnie "Hey, the crazier you are, the better you're gonna be." And I think, he kind of took it to heart. It just got a little too nutty for me. So, in the middle of the night, I just walked out. It had been a bad night the night before. I had good reason to leave. (laughs) I should never have done it the way I did it." It musta been a mess, all them great guitar players and that singer in one band. Hell, he wasn't really even a singer, more a talker, but all together they were just something else. I still listen to the live one pretty regularly, but never listened to anything else after the plane wreck. They just wasn't Skynyrd nomore. My favorite out with my bands was Tuesdays Gone. I never minded Sweet Home or Freebird or Gimme Three, never tired of them but didn't care if we did them or not, but always always always looked forward to Tuesdays Gone and I'd sulk if we didn't do that one. We opened for Outlaws a few times in and around the Blazing Saddles stuff, and them guys said that Skynyrd was the best bunch you could ever have in a tour bus convoy. All these decades later when I got to see Hughie and Dix for a while here after one of Hughies last times out in 2005 he still laughed and missed "that time and them guys". That musta been a hoot. rct
Fatstrat
The best thing about Ronnie from what I've read was that his entire premise for wanting to be in a band was to give the fans their monies worth. Which he reportedly came to after being decidedly disappointed at Stones concert watching them massacre their own songs. Ronnie vowed that his band would sound the same, live or studio. And that's what Hell House was about. Relentless practice until every song sounded exactly the same every time. He was also a gifted natural born lyricist. Fatstrat
Did you know he sang barefooted ? Oh yeah. Skynyrd fan from WAY back. I saw the original band in the 1970's before the crash. The Outlaws opened. Last saw them in 1998. for which concert I joined the LS fan club just to get meet & greet passes. Which was at the same time great and disappointing. Had really wanted to meet Rossington. But he didn't come out. Only met Billy, Leon and Medlock. Medlock was very busy w/some apparently extended (Indian) family members. Barely had time to give an autograph. Billy was very gracious and friendly. But Leon blew me away. My wife and I just come that day from Harley Davidson biker rally we had attended that weekend. And we were still wearing our "biker gear". HD shirts, leather vests etc. Leon welcomed us like family and talked to us extensively. Wanted to know where the rally was, where we were from, what we rode etc. Then during the show in which we had 3rd row seats, he spotted us. And made a point to throw picks and towels to us until all our party, (and most people around us) had authentic Skynyrd souvenirs. Still have em too. Framed on my wall. Altho it doesn't really count, I lived Miami Okla. for a few years in the 1980's. After Steve was gone. But I met quite a few of his friends & family and heard some great stories about him & Cassie. How he "got the call" from Skynyrd and all. I also knew Steve's old band mate & pickin buddy Ace Moreland. I was working construction at the time and Steve's family owned a construction company that contracted on some the projects I worked on.

Thanks! But I'm actually more of an acoustic picker. I have owned quite a few electrics over the years. And Fender is my choice. Great pickin too!
