Gibson Les Paul 2014 stock capacitor specs?

Howdy! I was wondering if anyone knows the specifications of the Orange Drop capacitors which (I believe) are part of the stock electronics of the 2014 Gibson Les Paul Studio guitar. (Much to my surprise, I can't seem to find this info anywhere on the internet.) Are they 225P or 715P? Are they .022mfd, or .047? Are they 100v, or higher? Thanks very much for help.

Hello and welcome to the Forums!

They are .022 micro-Farads. I`d be surprised if it was something else. Voltage rating is not important in guitars, these caps are also used in amplifiers, where it matters.

Cheers... Bence

Thanks for reply! I'm pretty sure they're .022...I thought there was a possibility of them being .047, based on a slightly darker sound that I heard on a 2014 Studio. It's my understanding that lower values sound brighter than higher ones.

I'm also very interested in figuring out which Orange Drop is used - 225P or 715P. I'm currently lost in the world of cap specs, which is of course a topic that has spawned many virtual fistfights. Not taking a side either way (yet), just curious re: specs of things that I play and hear.

I would like to hear how does new caps change the tone on a 490R/498T 2014 Studio. I don't appreciate the darker tone which is more usable for heavy metal. I mostly play in "tapped" mode, which has a lower/vintage output.

As far as sound goes...I'm playing a 2014 Les Paul Studio, through a VHT Classic and a VHT Special 6. I recently had the stock Orange Drop caps replaced with PIOs (I wasn't unhappy with stock sound - I just had an opportunity to swap in the PIOs while someone was working on the guitar, so out of curiosity, I said Yes).

I found that the PIOs (.022 Taihan Black Beauties) sounded pretty much as advertised - woody, with a bit of twang or bark. "Rubbery" is a word that I would use, relative to the Drops. I would actually describe them as a bit darker than the stock Drops; they seemed to swallow some of the highs. It's not a bad sound, it's just not what I was looking for. Matter of taste. A couple of days ago, I swapped in some 225P Orange Drops (.022/100v), and I'm back to a sound that I prefer. I tend to play high-gain rocknroll - not necessarily heavy metal, but I like using that sort of tone (e.g. Metal Muff, Rat v. 2). I also prefer the cleans of the 225Ps, but again, it's a matter of taste. I think that the Drops could fairly be described as "clinical" compared to the PIOs...and that works for me. You may prefer the PIOs.

In case anyone's interested, I contacted Gibson about the stock caps. They told me that they used .022/600v Drops, which is interesting...that's a fairly high voltage, relatively speaking, and the inference is that they're not 225Ps, which only go up to 400v. They're most likely 715Ps, or possibly 716Ps, or another variety of Drops. 225P is polyester, 715P is polypropylene. The difference between the stock caps and the PIOs, was significant, to my ears. The 225Ps sound close enough to stock that I'm in no hurry to swap them out.

edit: not sure that answered your question...I just wanted to go on about my PIO experience.
