surfpup
More than just carrying the torch. I'd say he's gone beyond what anyone has done on slide before. Just an astounding talent.

L5Larry
The ABB Marshall in question sat on top of a display case in a friend of mine's vintage guitar shop for about 35 years until he sold it to Derek (I DO know what Derek paid for it, but I'm sworn to secrecy). I never did actually get to play through it, and in fact I don't ever remember it getting plugged in. Both Duane's 'bursts (one or both are owned by his daughter Galadrielle) are/were on display at the R&R HoF (I saw them there last summer). From the vid it looks to be the plaintop has taken a sabbatical from the display case. His Goldtop is owned by a private collector and is generally on display at the "Big House" museum in Macon. The owner also "tours" it around for people to play. I REALLY like the idea of these iconic museum pieces actually getting played (and heard). Vince Gill seems like such a good guy and an awesome player even if I'm not a country guy I still like him alot and even like his music... I happened upon this footage of Derek too.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-9eEYh7ACE I noticed that wasn't one of his standard signature SG's, something about it from the aging on the pickup covers looked original/vintage... I recalled the Duane Allman/Dickey Betts SG that Gibson put out and went and took a quick peek and realized Derek was playing The ABB original SG as the holes down the body are clearly visible and I suspect it's the original axe this tribute from Gibson Custom Shop was patterened from... Cougar
Talk about being carried to The Promised Land!!! Pretty amazing. Not that I know much, but I was pretty surprised at his right hand technique. He's picking most of that solo (well, and some pounding). He also didn't let it stop him when he ran out of fretboard. He was playing notes above the pickups at one point!

Jimi Mac
There are several out there who will swear that Derek Trucks is Duane reincarnated. It was an even more pronounced ideal when I saw him back in the mid 1990's. He was younger and the similarities were poignant. Whether this seems like sacrilege to say, I believe at this point in his career he's eclipsed what Duane had accomplished in his tragically short career... He's probably a better player now than Duane had achieved not having the opportunity to continue to pioneer and revolutionize as he would have had he lived longer... I think Derek is now continuing beyond where Duane had left-off and had always been able to channel Duane's spirit... And Cougar, yes that is an advantage to playing slide, you can continue down the strings beyond where the fretboard ends and hit those higher notes you just can't do fretting... The right hand technique is an art-form that is developed by those that finger-pick when playing slide. It is a true artisan talent. You'll see that in slide players especially; they develop a technique that both picks and mutes the strings they don't want ringing out then they play. They both pick strings and mute the strings that they're not picking with their thumb and fingers. It's the hallmark of slide players that are truly good. Too much unwanted resonance of strings ringing out that you're not intending causes a very muddy over-tone that takes away from the poignant notes and phrasing that you do want to ring and sound. Those that do this technique well get only all the right/best notes to ring even though the motion of the slide will cause the strings to resonate some by itself without even picking them with a sort of dull drone that perverts the notes you do want to ring-out. Since often the guitar is tuned to open tunings; which means every fret is that key's chord all the strings ringing-out is good for the rhythm parts but to change the type of chord you play you need to mute certain strings that are the notes not within the chord you want to play becomes the focus instead of fretting the notes you do want to play. When soloing you have to mute any of the notes you don't want to play because they'll naturally ring-out with the increased motion of the slide on the strings as the single notes are sought after instead of multi-note chords. The real talented ones can play slide in standard tuning as well and achieve nearly the same sounds even if not the fuller chord sounds because they can even mute the notes that are not in the chords across a fret... Duane could do both as well as Derek, and Warren Haynes of The ABB & Government Mule as well... Derek is simply a phenom and the current master of slide technique, very possibly without peer...
