Vibrola metal plate

I know this has probably been asked to death already, but I was wondering if there's some way to install the Vibrola metal plate (not the actual bar, just the long piece of metal with the Vibrola/Gibson logo on it) without actually having to drill into the body of the guitar. I somewhat recall seeing someone doing just that, but I can't remember how he did it...

Also, another question. I really like binded necks with dot inlays (such as the SG Classic), is there any way to add binding to an allready un-binded neck? If not, are there some sort of faux-binding which can be added easily and doesn't destroy the neck too much?

Thanks! eusa_whistle.gif

As far as the vibrola is concerned, no, unless you're a fan of industrial-strength double-sided tape you've gotta' put a few screws in the guitar. Which is fine if you're gonna' leave it on because they're hidden inside the unit.

You could always use some auto-pinstriping for faux binding on your neck. I've thought about doing that on my beater Epi w/Maestro. It's made for cars, so it would stand up to normal playing conditions for a long time.

Wouldn't that destroy the wood though? I've heard that those kind of things easily wear the neck down and destroy the paint... Have you ever seen a picture of it? Would've been nice to see approximately how it would turn out.

Thanks about the Vibrola info' date=' though. Would you happen to know some places (preferrably in Europe, but the US is fine too) that sell the Vibrola metal plates and/or complete units? I'd like to stay away from eBay if possible, but I guess I could give it a try too.

EDIT:

Just found this at the Allparts site. How exactly does one install this kind of binding? Do you just glue it on?

The stuff you found on AllParts is actual binding, and to install it you'd have to defret your neck, have the edge routed per the thickness of the binding, and refretted and bound accordingly. Lotsa' work, and pricey.

Adhesives aren't usually a problem with guitars aside from possible discoloration on light-colored finishes or if you use harsh chemicals to remove them (Goo Gone or Ronsonol lighter fluid works fine, and if you wipe it all off after use it won't mar the finish), and the vinyl pinstriping itself won't react with the paint unless you light in on fire...lol It's not going to hurt anything to try it out. Just be patient and careful and you'll be okay.

You can't get a "Gibson" stamped/engraved Maestro aftermarket (and I've heard that you basically have to have a close friend or relative with connections at Gibson to get one from the factory), but AllParts sells the unit itself: http://www.allparts.com/store/tailpieces-tremolo-tailpieces-tp-3680-001,Product.asp

You could occasionally find a vintage official Gibson one on eBay, but you'll pay anywhere from 2 to 4 times the cost, depending on condition and how complete/intact it is. Nothing wrong with the aftermarket ones though, and someone with a skilled metalworking hand may even be able to help you out with making it into an official-looking replica.

I guess it all depends on how badly you want the Gibson name/logo on it, since thats totally an asthetic thing.
