Bumble bee caps in Les Paul

Recommended Posts

OK I am a newbie so if this subject has been run into the ground already....please forgive me.

I have purchased a 04 '58 Historic Reissue figure top. It does not have the bumble bee caps and CTS pots. I love the way it sounds as is but my "snob appeal" side is curious....

Would it be a good idea to upgrade to these caps and pots and if so, where should I buy them? Also I would like to reverse the position of the bridge volume and tone with the neck volume and tone. I like to be able to do finger swells with the bridge pu. Any caveats in performing that mod?

Thanks for your comments!

Are you sure you have an 04 and not a 94? The serial number for both years would look the same. An 04 would have the bumble bees and CTS pots already, unless someone changed them out on you. Will it make much of a difference? That is hard to say without knowing what is in there now. As for your desire to switch the control locations around, there should be no problems, as long as the pickup leads are long enough. You might have to do some resoldering to get things switched around, but it shouldn't have any negative impact as long as the connections are resoldered well.

Rap..Thank you

for your kind and educated response!

OK the serial number looks like this....8 8407. After looking further on this website at the serial number information on Historic solid body guitars I am deducing that I have a 1998. Would you agree?

The caps are ceramic dark flesh toned circular. I would almost be afraid to change them as the tone is so fat. Some might say it is a very dark toned instrument, but I love it. Would the bumble bees change the tone significantly?

It came with a black case with "GIBSON Custom. Art. Historic" on it and the case had a few hang tags but no other case candy.

Thanks

Steve
