Studios vs Tributes

Recommended Posts

I keep an eye on LP Studio's for sale on eBay lest the perfect one come up, and have noticed a lot of the 50's/60's Tributes come up as Studios with Tribute either mentioned in the title or not until you check out the pics and read the text. I suspect sometimes not until people take receipt...

Are/were Tributes officially part of the Studio model line-up or do they stand alone as a separate model? (and should they be more expensive or less than regular Studios?)

thanks - no big deal, I was just interested as it seemed to be a regular occurrence.

When introduced in 2010, they were part of the Studio range, hence the name "Studio 50s/60s/70s Tribute". When these first models run out of productions, the new Tributes were put below the Studio line-up.

This was the first to come out in 2010, the "Studio 50s Tribute": http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Studio-50s-Tribute.aspx

Then it was joined with the "Studio 60s Tribute": http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Studio-60s-Tribute.aspx. Same guitar, with thinner neck.

The next model was the "Studio 70s Tribute": http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Studio-70s-Tribute.aspx. Maple neck with volute and newly designed rail-type mini humbuckers.

The next one was the "Studio 60s Tribute Darkback": http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Studio-60s-Tribute-Darkback.aspx

And finally the PAF-equipped "Studio 50s Tribute Humbucker": http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Studio-50s-Tribute-Humbucker.aspx. First appeared as "Thomann exclusive".

So these are the "Studio Tributes", and these are the simple "Tributes":

Also there were SG and Firebird Tributes.

thanks Bence. so basically...

- pre 2013 tributes are genuine studios (and assume same or better quality materials and parts and similar price when new)

- 2013 and tributes are lesser models than Studios and you might expect to be cheaper

to be fair, I reckon a lot of sellers wouldn't even know that especially if they weren't the first owner.

Hello 'Scales.

I don't really know if there is any difference in quality between the two ranges.

The original "Studio Tributes" were limited editions within the Studio range, just as the "Gem series" were couple of years before. That might be an excuse for a higher resale price.

  • 2 weeks later...

The guys in white shirts who work in Gibson Marketing Department make up these names.

I'm still a rookie guitarist but I'm hoping for the day I can really hear the difference between Studio, Custom Shop, Tribute, Re-issue, Traditional, Signature, and Standard guitars.

Plopping down more money just because the Marketing dudes say it is worth more scares me.
