charlie brown Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 A posting, in another thread got me to thinking about which guitars (specifically, my Gibson's) I play the most, and why? And, for several years now, I've gone to my Gibson SG '61 reissue "Satin" finish, and my Double Cut (TV yellow) Faded/matte or satin finished LP Special w/P-90's, for most of my needs. (Seen here, the day I purchased it.) Why? Because they sound great, mainly...but, ALSO, they "Feel" great, as well. They tend not to get "sticky," on hot/humid conditions, as much as the "Glossy" finished versions do. They don't show as much minor wear, or fingerprints, as well. How about you all? CB
Rabs Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Yup.... as you well know.. I got a Faded Special and I got a 60s Tribute Studio... Love them both so much... Nice sounding great playing guitars that are light weight and a lot of fun. And actually that's exactly the reason I got the DC, cos I was getting a bit fed up of the weight of my Classic, even when sitting.... These lighter guitars are so much fun to play on... I also like the fact you can almost feel the wood grain under your fingers with a non gloss finish.. that tactile feeling is another reason to like it.. Im glad they are bringing the Faded series back (and the tributes) For those of you that have never tried one, you really should :)
capmaster Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 First I have to say that I don't have a particular love for satin finishes. My first guitar with glossy body and satin bolt-on neck has been my Ibanez RG 430 in 1987, and I found out the satin neck's back is as convenient to handle as a glossy one, just different. So I decided to go with satin finishes as well as with glossy ones. Until today most of my satin-backed guitar necks are bolt-on to glossy bodies. This is different with my satin Gibsons since all of them have a glued-on neck and satin finishes all around them. And here they are, in order of appearance: two Frank Zappa "Roxy" SGs which by the way have untinted neck backs, Government II Series Explorer, SG Bass, and one EB 2013 strung roundwound, another one strung flatwound. The latest two are my only Gibsons with replacement pickups.
Mr. C.O. Jones Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Couldn't agree more with you guy's. The feel on the neck is a real pleasure. I was a bit scared that my LPJ wouldn't get played much when I got my Traditional. But it is so much fun to play it, and it sounds so nice that my fears were unfounded. I have to admit it isn't the stock satin finish. When I saw that it got shiny where my arm rests and on the back of the neck, I thought: hey that looks nice. Bought Virtuoso Polish and cleaner and you see how the story ended. Kind of a satin/faded hybrid. Really happy with it.
SteveFord Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 I like them because you can buff them out to a low-gloss finish. Not a great shot by any means but you get the idea.
the dog Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 here is my 50's tribute I just picked up recently....
surfpup Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 If the "Faded" finishes count, I have a couple that I like quite a bit. In fact two of my current three Gibsons feature faded finishes.
charlie brown Posted September 4, 2015 Author Posted September 4, 2015 Nice stuff, guys!! And, of course the matte "Faded" finishes count! Keep 'em coming! CB

4Hayden Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 If the "Faded" finishes count, I have a couple that I like quite a bit. In fact two of my current three Gibsons feature faded finishes. The one in the chair is my favorite 4H

eldorado2001 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Finally got the pix to show up. Les Paul Studio Faded Mahogany Might be my favorite guitar. 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker Rings like a bell. Highway 1 Stratocaster With unnecessary extra parts removed. Highway 1 Jazz Bass My first Fender, found it for under $500 new. After a couple hundred gigs it still looks nearly new. Highway One Precision Bass My number one gigging bass. American Special Precision Bass Louder & much brighter sounding than the Highway One Precision.
Autumn Light&Shade Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I love my satin finish I agree with Rabs, This is my work horse, a joy to play kind regards, Emma :)
Searcy Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I've had a bunch of them over the years. I really love the faded finished.
Autumn Light&Shade Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Hi Searcy, you have a great selection of guitars What model is the SG with the one knob and pup? I've never seen this before, it's very striking. kind regards, Emma :)

I've never seen this before, it's very striking. kind regards, Emma :) That's actually a 2011 SG Melody Maker. It has one humbucker and a maple body. They sold for $299 brand new and were universally despised for their cheap paint jobs, lack of features, cheap gig bags and "bottom feeder pricing". Their very existance proved once and for all the Henry J was a greedy tyrant who cared only about money even if it ment destroying Gibson forever. This one's been modified with a new pick guard and a relocated knob and jack.
AlanH Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Here are mine. Full gloss and bling is a luxury I can't afford. It's a good job the quality is the same and they play and sound just as good with or without trimmings. In fact, I prefer necks that are unbound. LP Studio '50s Tribute HB: Faded SG Special in the middle of this group: (the above Gibson LP Tribute replaced the Epi LP) And my Ibanez RG Prestige in "suede red":
cody78 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 I've got 2 satin Gibsons - a Les Paul Junior Special & '59 style Melody Maker. I've also got a Les Paul Traditional Pro with a satin neck & back and a Fender CD160se 12 string I bought a few weeks back which has a satin neck. The feel of a satin neck is fantastic, but I'm not always sure about the front of the body being a dull finish. Sometimes I wish I'd bought a gloss Les Paul Special, but I already have a bunch of gloss LP's and other Gibsons so it is a nice change and the Melody Maker does look cool in worn satin finish I think.
