Sho191 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Certainly has some issues: 1. Do they all smell this bad? Is it the Nitrocelulose finish or what. Makes mmy eyes water and gives me a head ache. How long does it take to "degas" these puppies. 2. Auto Tuner actually put's it out of tune. Not a different tune mind you,,, just sharp on the Low E and A.... I can tune it, hit the auto tune and it is then officially "Horrible". LOL Since I can't remove it without voiding the warranty I might have to return it. What a shame. Has the SG sound I'm looking for, Gorgeous guitar. I even like the Brass 0 Fret nut and the wide neck. That's all I've got bothering me at this point. Gimme some input on the smell thing if you can.
dino_j Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 My SG smelled sort of like a vanilla candle, nitrocellulose finish was my guess on that, stopped up in a case makes it worse. Although safe to handle, I don't think the finish truly cures completely for some time. I'd put the SG on a stand and leave it out of the case if the smell is bothering you. Sorry to hear about the Min-ETune issues. I want to like the new innovations, but I have to say this is one I am definitely going to pass on.
Sho191 Posted September 5, 2015 Author Posted September 5, 2015 Yep, I want to like it but it's hard to like something that doesn't work. It was an open box so this is probably the reason it was returned. Looks amazing, has great SG tone but can't let myself keep it if it doesn't work. The seller was a store and on Ebay so I let them know of the issue. We'll see.
capmaster Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Hello Sho, and welcome here. Sorry to hear from you that evaporations from your Gibson affect your health. Since all of my guitars spend 23+ hours per day in their cases, even my 2011 Gibsons smell - and, by the way, look - nearly like new. After playing them my hands smell like the guitars and basses do. Fortunately I don't have any bad feel due to it. Interestingly the US made wooden Fender cases of mine have a rather similar smell, perhaps through a similar fragrance within the glue, and it seems to transfer to the MIM guitars with time. The satin finish parts, necks in all cases - cases in a double sense - , are far more affected than the glossy bodies. When it's about glossy versus satin, faded, worn, vintage glossy etcetera finishes, those of the latter smell much more intense on my Gibbies. Of course glossy means a much smaller surface, so this seems logical to me. On the other hand, venting by storing the instrument outside the case in an appropriate environment should help to accelerate vaporizing of the unwanted volatile finish components. Hope this helps.
Sho191 Posted September 5, 2015 Author Posted September 5, 2015 So, I'm really kinda liking this guitar now. I've got the tuner charging at the moment. I just finished using it and it seemed to work flawlessly this time. I did it one string at a time and maybe that was the reason it worked better. It's been out of the case for more than 24 hours and while my mancave smells kinda like a Gibson, the Gibson is cooling off a little. Don't think it's going back. Guess it takes me a while to warm up to new guitars. Probably be going steady by tomorrow. haha capmaster, thanks for the welcome. Really like the extra width on the neck. I'm a new player so it helps my clumbsy fingers stay on the Es
