skilsaw Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 I changed to a leather strap on my LP and the different tone is wicked. I knew there had to be a reason why Gibson Leather Straps were so expensive.
Rabs Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Yes... Why do you think it is that so many rock stars wear leather ;)
capmaster Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Some LP players use that fugly 7ender straps saying multiple times 7ender all over them to get a thin, trebly sound Wearing them with the script upside down is said to intensify the effect. In case of a 355 with Varitone switch upright script may do. I bet that PAFs have more bite this way than P90s with a leather strap. Take a look at Chuck Berry: Also note the missing witch hat knobs of the tone controls.
cjsinla Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 Oh, that's my problem. I'm using straps made out of seatbelt material. I did give up my Fender straps, way too much treble.
SteveFord Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 For a truly unique TONE experience, give the ones made out of pleather a shot. Not nearly as rich a TONE as Corinthian leather but it makes for a nice change of pace. Interesting move on Chuck's part to see how it sounds without the knobs. That guy's always thinking...
HEADKNOCKER Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I agree a Good Wide Leather Strap gives tone to your axe Even works on a 7ender too If it makes it feel better then it is better in more than one way.. MY ACE FREHLEY TONE STRAP!!
Silvercrow Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 First, you guys said tone had everything to do with pickups... Then with strings, Then with the choice in amps, tube or solid state? Marshall or Pignose? Again, "It's in the fingers, stupid!" y'all said But then "It's in the knobs" along with "Knobs with / without pointers", KNOBS with metal thingies, ala carte! Don't forget the effects / lack of effects, on your tone... NOW it's the straps! All this leads me to only one conclusion: "THE MEMBERS ON THIS BOARD KNOW TONE!" I am standing buy, can of naptha in one hand, a grill lighter in the other, pile o' straps near by, waiting, wondering...will I have to burn my Levy's straps? BTW- IMO LEATHER, specifically bovine leather, with vinyl piping, creates the best tone for everything except Rap. PS- Happy Labor Day for those who celebrate it! Brian
skilsaw Posted September 7, 2015 Author Posted September 7, 2015 wait whats a seven-ender?? If you look at the stylized "F" in the fender logo, you will see it is "F" backwards, or a stylized "7". Conspiracy theorists think the CIA started listening to rock music backwards to hear subversive messages aimed at corrupting American youth some time after the logo was adopted. Those that cannot see the "7enders" in the Fenders logo will be moved to the back of the class. If their challenges to classroom decorum continue, they will have their desk, and all their posessions moved out into the hall.
skilsaw Posted September 7, 2015 Author Posted September 7, 2015 Sorry, double post. It's true. The men in suits made me do it.
SteveFord Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I know that this is the Les Paul section but if you're feeling adventurous, try a suede strap like I use with my 335 and Lucille. That smooth TONE will have the chicks lining up and taking a number.Brown seems to work best, black attracts the kinky ones. While many like Pleather best for that cut through the mix TONE, in my experience the groupies are mostly The Women Of Wal-Mart candidates.
BobF_ Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 The 7ender strap is a decoy. Chuck's tone comes from the bolo tie
'Scales Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I've heard 7ender straps can sound ok when used with Norlin era Gibsons though.
merciful-evans Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 So this is why vegans never get a decent tone. That damned recycled hemp webbing have no Sympathetic resonance.
BobF_ Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Hemp is an exception. Hemp always makes things sound better. I wouldn't trade my sandals for anything!
HEADKNOCKER Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I figure it's relative to how good the guitar feels hanging on your shoulder.. If it feels better it IS Better, therefore it sounds better, Even to a trained ear with perfect pitch.. Feels more like Butta... I can tell you that we just bought another braided gold tipped guitar chord & it absorbs tone compared to our VOX & Nutrix chords.. Hmmm?? Might try it on one of the basses to see if it changes things for the better.. It's Possible.. I'd say that Chuck Berry has lots of 7enders & got one of his straps on his 335 & doesn't use the tone controls, Most folks don't, they keep em on 10 Those straps used to come with new 7enders in the late 80s/early 90 IIRC.. My son has been wanting a early 90s Strat Plus & Tele with Lace Sensors & roller nut, Who am I to tell him that his Blueshawk, Nighthawk, Les Paul, Parker Fly, PRS & the other dozen or so have similar TONES.. They don't!! They're ALL Different!! I guess Chuck Berry got GAS or just wanted a 7ender strap.. I'd bet Gibson would make & give him anything he ever wished for IF Henry was doing his job right, Including a Killer Leather Gibson marked strap.. IN SEARCH FOR TONE!!
SteveFord Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 One shockingly overlooked link in the TONE chain would be the strap buttons. Gibson has never offered strap locks (as far as I know) so it seems reasonable to conclude that they're viewed as TONE vampires. As a side note, Chuck gets bonus points for duct taping the chord to his guitar.
stein Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 As a side note, Chuck gets bonus points for duct taping the chord to his guitar. That's for the "duct walk" thingy he does.
SteveFord Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Good one! Oops, I wrote "chord" instead of "cord". Don't mind me, I'm recovering from surgery and feel like the walking dead.
SteveFord Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 I'm not sure but I think his pants might be on backwards.
merciful-evans Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I'm not sure but I think his pants might be on backwards. That'll be his inverted phase tone pants.
jdgm Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Hemp always makes things sound better. Uhh....yeah.....

I retrofitted some to my other LP, L6S and Explorer guitars. No adverse effects so far. Perhaps I should add that I play them all using suede straps.

Even wearing your trousers backwards probably won't give you that Les Paul TONE that we all crave. On a serious note, I really miss those diamond shaped strap buttons that Gibson used to use for a little bit. They worked great, I don't understand why they got away from using them. Perhaps the pointy ends accentuated the high frequencies a bit too much? You'd think a little duct tape would make things right.
