MorrisrownSal Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I went to bring in my Martin D35 to replace the pickup (I think I installed the K&K badly). Well - that was the plan. Now Russo's is just going to take the pickup out... I tried out the new J45 Standard they just got in, and I bought it. It sounds great plugged in. And it just sounds terrific unplugged. I like it better than the prior versions; it seems this standard is built very light, and it sounds it. The neck does feel different. I would swear its a narrower nut, but I measured - it's not. The softer edges just makes it real comfortable. I played it down the shore this weekend, but I got back today and had a chance to fool around in my office. I recorded the first song that came to mind - My Father's Father by the Civil Wars. This is pitchy, but anyways here it is. Great guitar! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU59q_bJQNM Here is a better version... also one take... but using Garageband, where I could play with reverb, etc... https://soundcloud.com/sal-from-chatham/my-fathers-father
bayoubengal1954 Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Nice, Sal! Welcome back to Slopeville!
blindboygrunt Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Just watched the video and was thinking 'wait a second! He doesn't have a j45!' Guess you do!! Has the Martin gone then? Sounds awesome Sal. Near as good as mine! Fair play to you buddy :) Any idea of strings? Are they new?
ponty Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 It sound great. I tried one in Orlando recently. It was completely knockout. They (GC) had it next to a 15 model and it was far and away better sounding and playing. the 16 was 100 dollars more, and well worth it.
Hall Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Great sounding and looking guitar, Sal. Congrats and well done. steve
MorrisrownSal Posted September 7, 2015 Author Posted September 7, 2015 Thanks guys. Grunt the D35 is still with me. I love it.

duluthdan Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Classic great sounding J-45. Aren't they great when they capture your heart from the very first strum? As that nitro finish hardens its just gonna get better and better. I listened to this a couple of times, out on my covered deck in a thunderstorm, and in spite of the thunder echo in this valley I could still hear great separation and clarity . Wondrerful guitar. [thumbup]
duluthdan Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Forgot to ask - does it have that neat '2016' engraved TRC ?
Hall Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Meant to say also, the soft edges really do make a notable difference, don't they! I notice that to the point of getting spoiled by that feature. I think that is what makes the nut see narrower. Yourself and the guitar, sounding good. steve
MorrisrownSal Posted September 7, 2015 Author Posted September 7, 2015 ft neck, sweet sound, light, and yes it has the 2016 TRC, but I will replace it, as I have a few lying around. I wont mess with the tuners, as they just work great. Also the fret board has this nice reddish brown streak running down the center that I think is unique. On the downside it has this "runout" (I think this means when the left and right side of the top look pieced together and not blended proper - seen from some but not all angles?). But that doesn't bug me at all. Thanks again guys! Impulse strikes again.... but dang I could have worse vices. Here are some pictures:
zombywoof Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 You have just offered proof of something that should not need to be proven. Forget all of the sexy variations. In the end it just don't get any better than a good old J-45. Gibson got it right the first time. And they ain't improved on it none. And I kind of like the idea of putting the year on the TRC. But there are two things Gibson has got to get over. The first are those Grover Rotomatics on the J-45. They just look so wrong. Second, dump those pitiful excuses that pass for a firestripe pickguard on all of their guitars. They look more like melted caramel than flames.
blindboygrunt Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Hmmm. Needs new tuners . nice white ones ;) More pictures Sal. I every pretty. Something nice about a classic design huh?
blindboygrunt Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 And they've finally learnt to put pickguard in the right place !!
62burst Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 What the ? ? ? T'was a most temporary GAS remission. That was fast. Enjoy.
MissouriPicker Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Wow! Love the guitar, Sal. In all sincerity, the J45 Standard IS THE "STANDARD" that all others are measured by. Your video is another example of why so many other guitars (many costing far more that the J45) pale when matched against it. As much as I tend to favor my Hummingbird, I know that the J45 is a very special guitar. Tough to improve on perfection..........Congrats on another killer guitar.
flatbaroque Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Arise Sir Sal! Welcome to the Royal Society of the Black Nut.Other members include Lord Em7, Baron BluesKing777 and Duke Flatbaroque. We don't tend to use our titles as we like to mix with the common folk....those that just own Hummingbirds etc
E-minor7 Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Hey there you go, , , a little crazy, but the slope sounds great. Very lively and single-note-clear. Now don't sell the Bird, Sal. You need to be able to play those dreads after one another. It'll tell all there is to know about the 2. Stay High

So it is the plain non-toasted J45 Standard? I have NOT listened - this work computer has no soundcard thanks boss! Listen later on my Mac..... BluesKing777.

Keep black horn on the '65 CW and carved a black tusq-one for the re-necked modified '66 CW today. Will write about that later btw.
Bozz Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Nice get, Sal! That thing sounds really nice. Pretty cool grain on the fingerboard too. I don't think I've seen one like it before. The runout really isn't that much of a downer to me. You notice it when it's new, but pretty soon you won't be giving it a second thought. You see plenty of high end guitars with grain runout. Congrats! I thought I had a problem with four new guitars in the last year and a half. I think you have me beat! Your house must always smell like nitro!
Smurfbird Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Sal, CONGRATS! I do hope you'll be keeping them all. You can't go wrong with a classic J-45, Hummingbird and D35 all in the stable, with the LG-2 there for couch-picking. Thanks for sharing and taking us all on this ride of yours.

A bit much I concede. But life is short, and I paid my dues. Twice I think.
