That middle p/u on a Black Beauty

Honestly, is there really any better bargain for its price than a recently built Epi?

I've been thinking about a Black Beauty for some time and your clip is mighty good testimony to its versatility. I especially like the sound of the first 30 seconds or so of the clip. Distortion is distortion. A lovely warm undistored clean tone is something not every electric is capable of, especially in this era of super hot pickups. Don't get me wrong, the rest if your clip sounds very nice indeed, but the true essence is found with that volume knob rolled down.

Really, very nice and thanks for sharing.

thanks. It really is a great bargain...even the new price. But you can get them used for even less. I get what you mean about the lower volume. When I got it, based on what I was reading I assumed I would change the pickups. But it only took a few minutes to see I wouldn't have to. I like that they are not too hot. If I want that I will get from the amp. The cleaner pickups, to me, give more clarity between notes. maybe make you work a little harder to pull the notes out of the guitar, but that comes thru in the playing.

The only grip I have about the guitar are the pots. They are not really responsive enough. And when I get it down real low at some point they cut off the signal. Not smooth. But an easy enough fix and not too expensive...still make the guitar a great deal.

Here is one with some cleaner tones

gwardealy,

Your tones are sublime, your technique is impressive, your wrist is supple, and your phrasing is really tasty.

Not to go all bro-mance on you, but MAN.

You play a mean black Les Paul, sir.

thank you. I really appreciate that you see it as sublime and tasty. I've done the whole rock band. playing out, recording...clubs etc thing. And I just want to play my guitar and actually feel it.....and play it so its heard like that. I don't want to fool around with vocals and lyrics, so I try to apply that to the guitar as opposed to a guitar solo way of thinking. I stared recoding it just so I would remember if I did something good enough to remember. But then I got into trying to play live that way instead of recording and punching in.

So each 'song' ends up being a memory of what i was feeling at the time. Its not written out or rehearsed. Example....anyone know what it feels like when you're only daughter leaves and goes to college [glare] ...for me, it feels like this:

thank you.

yes! The Mick Ronson video!! I got tired of going thru videos to find the good parts...so I put them all together. Did you see the other Ronson videos? Where he is talking about his playing?

No, but I have now! Thanks for the suggestion. Mick was always one of my heroes, lovely to see that.

That is what us old cats call "soul"; playing with real feeling. Your playing is a perfect example of what is meant by the saying: "Gotta pay your dues if you want to play the blues.." If more people could express their feeling using music as the vehicle, there would be no need for Xanex, or Prozac!

I agree. Its one thing to be a technician on he guitar...but something else to find that place where you really feel something deeper than just the playing

I took the pickup covers off the guitar...i think it gives it a somewhat brighter more open sound. Very subtle....but its there.
