Searcy Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 In a Facebook post REO Speedwagon singer Kevin Cronin wrote, 'My longtime friend and collaborator Gary Richrath passed away earlier today. I feel so sad. Gary was both a unique guitarist and songwriter, and the embodiment of the tough guy with a heart of gold. I learned most of what I know about being in a rock band from Gary Richrath. The entire REO Family mourns his death and shares in the grief of his family, friends, and fans. These words do not come close to expressing the depth of emotions I am feeling at this time.kc' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHu-SqUqoak
btoth76 Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Very sad news. He was an outstanding musician. Rest in peace. Bence.
capmaster Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Oh my God. :( Gary was the guy to whom I owe half of my soloing style. A former long-year bandmate of mine and I revered him over most other players and always felt he was underrated. I wished I didn't have lots of his style only but his skills, too. R.I.P., Gary, you will always remain a very great one to me.
surfpup Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Sad news. I always loved his tasty playing.
kidblast Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 that is sad news, lots of nostalgia happens for me when REO pops up on Pandora. RIP Gary.
rct Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 gad dammit. Roll With The Changes always my favorite part of the evening. Who didn't want to do that with a guitar back then? goddammitall. rct
Silvercrow Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 To Me, Gary WAS REO Speedwagon! Death comes to us all and with death, change. Thank the Lord for the memories he has left with us; preserved for posterity in his many recordings. Brian
jdgm Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 I read of this earlier; at 65 he was far too young. RIP; a very fine player (who also had a notable collection of vintage LPs).
Doug the Old Geezer Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 RIP. It brings back memories of getting stoned in Southern Minnesota and driving around in snow blizzards helping people out of the ditch or stuck in snow banks and rocking to "Riding the Storm Out". Our winter blizzard anthem.
LPguitarman Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 RIP Gary. One of my favorite Les Paul players.
surfpup Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Once they became MTV megastar's they lost it. Gary was a great player. I read an interview once where he talked about how his job in REO had become adding Marshalls to Kevin's acoustic ballads. He did put the power in power ballad for sure, but the older stuff makes he happy. Like this gem...
kelly campbell Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Sad...Great guitarist loved his playing..especially on the last two songs mentioned on the previous two posts...I would throw in 157 Riverside Avenue
Retired Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 So sad for his lose. REO were a great band and he was a great guitarist. My wife told me earlier today about his passing, and being so young still. We listened to some of his songs together.
