jdgm Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Today, Sept 15th was Battle Of Britain Day over here. This commemorates the climactic and most decisive day of that combat. I had read there would be as many Spitfires and Hurricanes in the air as they could put up but didn't think they would come anywhere near me. Drove to the pharmacy mid-afternoon, after 2.30, for my prescriptions. Waited while they were filled and then the pharmacist wanted a quick chat - when was my last cholesterol test? And I get a 'flu jab free as I have a heart condition. Ok and thanks. I walked outside and there was a sudden roar of aero engines - plural - and I looked up in time to see a formation of 6 aircraft coming over low, think it was 2 Spits and a Hurricane followed by 3 more Spits. I shouted out loud - "WOW"! and a few other people looked up. Then they were over the rooftops and gone. Wow again. I am thrilled just to have got that glimpse of it. Did any other UK members get a look? From the time of day and the direction of flight I think they were White Section heading back to base. Here's the official link to the routes: http://www.battleofbritainday.co.uk/#!routes/c1px Best wishes to all.
Hall Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 States here, but I can appreciate the sight just the same!
Pesh Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Watching the CH4 show on it now; I didn't see them fly over work where I was today, but some mates were at Goodwood.
Flight959 Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Despite being 10 mins from RAF Dunsfold in West Sussex I didn't even get a sniff... I used to live between RAF Biggin Hill and RAF Kenley. Gutted!! The sight and the sound is very special.. I'm with Pesh watching C4 Regards Simon
stein Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 I think the Spitfire is my favorite plane, like many, many others. And also, the Battle of Britain might be my favorite "battle" to read about or watch. Certainly, one of the most interesting and important battles in all of history.
kidblast Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 I live about a mile or 2 from a very close to a large municipal airfield. They used run air shows every year in September. The Flying Escadrills (a group of pilots who maintain and fly restored WWII aircraft) would always be there with a number of air craft. We'd see plans coming and going that weekend all the time, you can hear them coming the unmistakable sound of multiple large propeller air craft off in the distance, etc. On year, a group B17s (four 4 them) flew in formation, right over our neighborhood on the way to the airfield. The sound shook the ground. it was awesome. We're on a big hill I got a real good view of the fly by. They were quite low.
