NAD - Fender Supersonic

I've been thinking about one of these for a while. An opportunity has arisen to buy an "FSR" limited edition version. It has a greenback instead of the eminence designed fender speaker the normal version has.

Anyone tried one of these? It's B grade so it's cheaper than a new standard version. Do people upgrade the speaker or is the eminence speaker well received? I could buy this, and the eminence speaker for less than I can buy the standard amp.

Any other thoughts on the supersonic?

The Supersonic is a great amp. It is a high gain amp with a cascading type overdrive. It can be pretty nasty sounding if you don't get the gain dialed in right. My partner in the amp business bought one and we messed around with it a lot and got it sounding really nice. Here's a video of the modded amp. I can send you a list of the stuff we did if you want to mess around with it.

I'd definitely be interested in that. It was one of these that helped sell the R8 to me. I was going to buy that very amp ex demo but they sold it the day before I decided to buy it. Now that this one has come up I'm almost decided but I'm just a bit concerned that the changes on this "limited edition" might be for the worse although all I can find on it is the different speaker and a lairy orange and black tolex which I can take or leave. It's the price that attracts me.

I don't get paid 'til Wednesday and I bet it sells. Thinking about calling them and offering a deposit.

I wanted one for a long time, but the price kept me from buying. The ones I played did classic Fender cleans very well along with high gain ability that was really sweet. I might have ended up wanting to mod it after a while, but it wasn't something I was planning on right away.

I still might pick up a head one day if I come across a good deal on one.

I think generally, the Eminence speaker isn't all that well thought of, but MY opinion is that it is a good speaker.

Reason I say that is people seem to always be trying to "upgrade" the amp by changing the speaker. Including Fender, by selling editions like the one you are looking at.

I have done the same thing with other amps that come stock with that speaker. And I used to have a LOT of speakers hanging around. I say it's a good speaker because it USUALLY ends up going back in the amp, and it works well with a lot of other amps. I could describe it better if you want.

I haven't heard the newer Celestians Fender is using.

If you do want and get the amp, I would think the Eminence speaker would be easy to find.

I think I'm gonna do it. I kind of don't do high gain anymore but I'm not sure I'm willing to turn my back completely. The crunch sounds from the SS seem really nice and not muddy. I like playing through my home made amps but they're all low power and my TSL60 is OK but the crunch channel is a bit muddy so I end up using the lead channel with most of the gain dialed out. Also, being 60w it's permanently throttled. I could try an attenuator but it's big and the music room is a little smaller since we moved. I think this will suit better and I absolutely love the standard model. I can't see this being that far different. The irony is, I'll probably re-cover it in the cream tolex one day. Orange and black just doesn't do it for me. Maybe I'll find someone willing to change cabinets with me, you never know.

BBP. I'd really appreciate it if you could tell me the mods you've tried, what you expected and what you got. I don't think I'll jump straight in and mod it but it's good to know some tried and tested options.

I still have 2 big (2x12") Fender combos and the Twin II has a truly wonderful overdrive channel.

I can't bring myself to sell it...yet. I really did injure myself picking it up the wrong way some years ago.

Damn. I'm going to have to take that out to rehearsal next time now.

Buy the amp. Buy it.

Even if only for a little while.....there is just nothing else like it.

Were you not building a small combo????

If you want less gain (and it is a high gain amp) you might start by swapping the 12AX7 tubes in V1 and V2 for 12AT7s. Oldest Fender trick in the book. (5751s work too for a bit less drop in gain than the 12AT7). Pretty sure you are aware of the different gain factors in those tubes - it can make a huge difference. Go all the way down to 12AU7 to make it really interesting. [biggrin]

Tell ya what- that amp sounds darn tasty to me! Very few amps I like an "overdrive" channel on- but that amp sounds great IMO!

Let us know when you get that bad boy home...!

It's done. Paid a £300 deposit to hold it until Wednesday. I'll pay the balance and it should be delivered on Thursday.

I watched some vids last night, not that telling with youtubes compression of data except that I concentrated on comparison videos which helps.

I can't wait to get home on Thursday now!

Hey Farns! I owned the standard Supersonic for well over a year but ultimately sold it - not because I didn't like it because I did - a great amp - it's just that I have so many amps & many Fenders among them, that the Supersonic just didn't cover any tonal territory that I didn't already have in the stable. I was not aware that they had come out with an FSR limited edition with a greenback speaker but I love greenbacks so I can't imagine that wouldn't sound good in that amp as well [thumbup]

I see you've already thrown down a deposit so I'm not trying to influence you in any way - just wanted to add my .02 cents worth. I would actually like to hear that amp with a Celestion greenback in it. Have fun & enjoy it brother! [thumbup]

Hmm. I'm sure I'll make a vid. I'll make sure that riff features. Not one of my goto pieces though! ;)

Thanks Rev. I think the celestian will add a little detail to the sound. From what I've read alone the eminence is considered slightly woolley and lacking definition. It's in a relatively large box for a 12 so it should get the breathy-ness in the crunch, I could even mic the back and flip the phase with the mic on the front to add to that.

I think if I felt the need I could dial out what the celestian brings to the party but I don't think one can dial in the definition said to be lacking from the eminence. The one thing I know is I can get the eminence and put it in and still be way better off financially. That is really the basis for the decision to buy it, even with a different speaker.

Now then. Anyone in the market for some orange tolex coz that is coming off and being replaced with black. I might remove it all and recover in cream but that black and orange ain't me.

They did a different FSR run on these a while ago in black and gold, I liked that.

Anyway, here I am thinking about the appearance of a device designed entirely to be heard. If I was really that conciousness of these things I wouldn't be playing an R8 in one of my least prefered bursts.

This thread needs some photos!

Argghh. You just reminded me of the aesthetic monstrosity I've purchased. I have a large sheet of acoustic cloth. I can I'm gonna have to drape it over that thing and learn where the nobs are.

Yes the back does look Orange-y at 1st glance....

I think it will sound great. But then I like Fender combos.

Balance paid and delivery hopefully happening tomorrow!

I wasn't posting the source or price deliberately because they only had one but now it's all done...

£729, RRP £1342, street was about £1250. Got it from GAK. It's been in the shop for demoing guitars for about a year. I think it says a lot about an amp when the shop put it in the room that has all the top end custom shop guitars in it for demo-ing. They obviously think it will sell guitars and handle abuse. The last 2 amps they used in there were fender supersonic 22 as well although with the standard speaker.

I expect to have to revalve it but if so, no loss, just an opportunity to play with combination 12ax/u/t7s and some varying 6v6's. I have loads so it's all good.

Quite excited.

Anyone wanna buy a Marshal TSL 60 JCM2000 head and 1960a cab? It's just too big for my purposes.

Posted

Oh man you even want to sell your Marshall, that sounds like your in love!

Congratulations!

It is really an interesting amp.

From what I've seen it would be something I personally would like.

Beautyfull clean's but if you need the balls you have it.

But you are right about the orange tolex, look's a bit off on a Fender.

And that comming from a diehard Orange fan!

Nice man, enjoy with good health.

I've wanted to sell the marshall for a while actually. I've moved into a much smaller room for the music stuff when I moved house and it's just too big. I also never get to open the taps and that's never good for ones tone.

It has arrived according to Mrs Farns.
